I went the same way a few years back but without a DUI on my record. I had a spotless record and verifiable commercial OTR experience. The operator paid more but didn't work as mush as a driver. So what counts is the W2's at the end of the year. Sure back in 1990 I could make $35 an hour running dozers but only working 6 mouths out of the year. That was a job at the Nevada Test Site where I would be placed on the "B" list. Hauling gasoline paid me by the hour ($20) back then but I work every week except for vacation. Overtime was a killer so the job was just the best around and everyone wanted to work there. But times have changed and the big oil companies do not want their trucks on the road anymore so they hire a company to do their hauling. So the money is lower than before.
I also would rather run a dozer all day long instead of driving. So really take a good look at all the jobs and do your research. Don't be impressed by the hourly wage and ask what was the total for the year. You're going to have problems because of that DUI. It's going to require you to get out and look. DO NOT just send a application in by e-mail or mail. Think about what you would do if you were doing the hiring and you had to go off the written record. Your application does not look good compared to someone with a clean record. The only, and it's small, advantaged is your military record. And that's only at some companies. So you're going to have to hit the bricks and do a lot of research. Make a list of what you want and go after it.
Wanting to start truckin, one DUI
