Im new to this forum and mainly here to seek advice. I have drove class b straight trucks and flatbeds locally in and around the D.C. and Baltimore area for the past 4 years. I want to drive class a otr permanently. I had my class a permit but couldn't rent a truck around my area due to them being so booked. I do not currently have $4500 for driving school nor think I need the need to go threw that considering Ive been around trucks since I was knee high and just need a little hands on experience. Common sence go's a long way in the trucking industry. What company's are wiling to train me currently? Who would I call? What are my options? Im 22 and layed off, have moved furniture locally with United Van Lines for the military for the past 4 years and it isn't cutting it any more...

I want to be an OTR driver! Please help ,all suggestions would be respectfully appreciated!

There are many trucking companies out there that will train you as well as employ you. A quick search in the forums will reveal them. I would make a list for you but there are so many. lol Going for a Class A is a good idea. Just remember that you have a 53 foot trailer to contend with and they are most likely going to want to see you do some offsets and 90 degree backing during your CDL test. No disrespect to running a straight truck or your experience, but its an entirely different animal running a tractor trailer combo. I do think you are approaching it correctly though by seeking a company which will train and employ you. Good luck Driver and keep us posted!

My grandfather and uncles all have at least 50 years experience to each of there name they say there drivers and most of the rest are just wheel holders lol. I actually drove a tractor before a straight Illegally at around 17, around farms, locally and hauling logs. Like I said Iv'e been around this bs all my life and never figured Ide ever want to drive, just kind of fell into it. Drivings strictly common sense and experience nothing more, nothing less. Back then you got in the truck and just drove using that thing between your ears to drive, today you would think you need a masters degree just to get started. If I come off as ####y its not intended I just miss the old way of life when everything wasn't so complicated.

    Thanks for previous post^

#1 the pre trip is whats going to be the worst for me
Also I plead guilty for a DWI about a year ago. Will a company still train me?

1 year old DWI is going to be the biggest problem.

I agree that the dwi is going to be difficult to get beyond.

Most carriers will want at least 5-10 years to pass before hiring someone with a DWI. I would expect that most insurance companies won't touch you for at least 3 years. Most go back 3 years on your MVR. As long as that shows up you will likely find it difficult to over come. You could possibly find someone who will be able to insure you and give you an opportunity. The only thing you can do is get on the phone and start calling companies and be up front with them about the DWI. There is no reason to try to hide or under play it. All they need to do is check your MVR and criminal background.

    Great advice ! ^

I also caught a second degree assault charge the same night! Wasnt my fault just a freak night at a bar that Ive paid for dearly. Long story...

I have been contacting the local community college for advice on student loans and financial aid toward cdl training. They said financial aid doesnt cover cdl training and I have to get a student loan, contrary to the fact I messed up my perfect credit line the night I got the assault charge and dwi. Things have just been going down hill since and just cant get out of this rut im in. Its starting to seem like I have this black cloud will never leave. Im a young wise man with a more than decent head on my shoulders and a slave apatite for work. It just seems like lately no single person on this planet will let me prove myself to them ,company what have you! I just need to get my foot in the door to make that good reputation. But cant get away from this poverty and depression.. Im a good guy and nothing seems to ever go half way decent or my way no matter how #### hard I try.

    Sorry for the pointless rant.

Still any suggestions or feedback would be appreciated.

You may want to check into local companies where you may have a better chance to get started and then let some time pass. The assault is a Double negative for you I'm sorry to say. I feel for you man. I've seen how hard it is to shed our mistakes even when you have repayed your debt and and did your time. It's like you can never get away from it. I wish you the best of luck and hope that you will keep us posted on your search and training.

Oh forgot to mention. Check and see if there is a Sage Truckdriving School near you. They are good schools and usually provide grants for those who qualify.

Insurance companies.....like g man said is the problem..if they go back only three years..(thought it was five..!!) what I would do is find another straight job local....work for two more years doing that..straighten out my credit, and then get the class A....

    just my 2 cents..

    all the best......
