What are the requirements and how long does the process usually take? Is all I need a CDL, leased truck and a positive attitude or is it a bit more than that?
What do I need to do in order to run under my own authority?

let me edit my comment.
in reality there is more than that to it, but to many that all they think it entails.
but no, you have to have liability insurance, operating authority(unless you run exempt products) , a dot number, ifta, and several other items.
but as you say you are doing this for school do as the guy suggested and contact ooida, I am sure they would send you a complete packet to help you out -
Check OOIDA website and you will find the steps necessary. Best wishes.

Yup. There's a really good thread on this - lots of detail.
Search the owner op section I think.
Good luck! -
No need to search, the threads they are talking about are "sticky" threads at the top of this forum. Read them and then ask question from there.

It takes about 3-6 weeks to get your authority back, once you apply. You will need a registered agent for all jurisdictions in which you plan on running. OOIDA will act as your registered agent if you are a member. The fmcsa requires a minimum of $750,000 liability insurance, but most brokers and shippers require a minimum of $1 million auto liability and $100,000 cargo. Some states require intrastate authority if you pick up and deliver within their state. California and Texas are the two largest. Running intrastate, you will need a KYU number from Kentucky, HUT from New York and a weight distance account in New Mexico, if you run in those states. You can apply for a dot number when you apply for your authority. There is a $300 application fee for the authority and no charge for a dot number. You will need to pay and have a receipt that your 2290 (Heavy Highway Use Tax) has been paid before you can get your base plates. You will need an IFTA account that can be applied for when you get your IRP or base plates. You will also need to pay your UCR before being able to get your base plate. You can't do anything before your authority is active.
nofreetime Thanks this. -
Just put my truck on the road yesterday and was surprised that in NY you do not need proof of 2290 payment in order to get plates if you bought the truck in the last 60 days. Not sure if all states are like that now?
