Is the Road test as difficult as the DMV test I remember failing the test several times for the simplest thing, but failing the CDL road test is really pricey
What % fail the road test?

I found the road test for CDL easier. When I tested for my car license I really only had maybe 1,500 kilometers of driving experience (and at 17, not a lot of confidence in knowing the rules of the road). When I tested for CDL I had close to 200,000 kilometers worth of time on the road in cars/medium duty trucks so I knew the rules of the road already, which took a ton of stress off. Left me more able to focus on shifting and not dragging my trailer over stuff lol.

My son just got his commercial this past January at age 22 (hes 23 now).He had moved and parked trucks all the time as I have a Truck and Trailer Repair Business he worked in since he was 14 and he was very familiar with trucks.I also had a medium duty IH Service truck with a 10Speed he loved to drive.Anyways he went to a truck driving school for a few weeks (in order to get some practice and use their Truck). He had a problem with the trucks tractor protection valve(It didnt set the brake and he kept going rather than test it again) the first time on the pretrip and never got to drive they failed him.The next week He took the test again and passed with flying colors.Moral is If you know your way around a truck it should be easy enough. He now drives Construction Trucks such as dumps, end dumps, water trucks etc. all over the SF bay area and is doing great.I was worried for him as a dad that he wasnt ready but hes doing great. They are gonna start training him for Heavy Haul now this spring.
I will let you new truck drivers in on a secret. You can make a GREAT living as a driver if you think a little outside the box.Chinatown Thanks this. -
Looking at the pass/fail rates for schools in California, it depends on the school. Schools in Cali have to post their performance on their website so students know what the pass/fail rates are, as well as the percentage employed upon successful completion. It has helped weed out the private schools that didn't deliver. I am looking at 2 schools for my CDL, one has a 97% pass rate the first time, and those that fail pass it on the second attempt. The other school, which is closer to me, has a 91% pass rate on first try, but for some reason it has 2% failed after the second attempt, or never completed the course. The only problem is, it does not state why, did they drop, or did they not receive the instruction they should have?
