When I went to trucking school about 4 1/2 years now that was still the rule. Also no changing gears on the railroad track. I’ll never forget the drive instructor came back to the yard at the school after one of the students attempted to change gears going over a railroad track. Well the truck died and then he braked the #### thing to stop right on the track. Yeah you can’t make this up. Then the stupid truck wouldn’t start. Lol
I’ve never seen an instructor so mad in my life. They had to call the phone number on the sign there at the intersection. Luckily there was no railroad traffic coming. A mechanic rushed over and they got the truck started and off the track.

The next day, the head instructor came into the classroom and said if any student changes gears on a railroad track again you’ll be permanently thrown out of the class. Lol

I took my test fifteen years ago. I asked the guy if I could shift in the intersection. He said: "If you don't, how are we gonna get anywhere???". I'm unsure if this "rule" is an actual rule, or an old wives tale.

In other words, show me in the book where it's a problem, because the book is the only thing that actually matters.

There's a difference between "in the intersection" and "in the turn".

I already shut down my computer for the night or I'd go spelunking for the reg, but shifting in a turn is a point off on a cdl test. I felt he standard is once the tractor is straight and centered in the lane the driver can resume shifting.

Regardless of it being a rule or not, it's a good habit for new drivers. Shifting in a turn is slightly different than making a normal shift - just like shifting on an incline is slightly different. Not hard if you know what you're doing, but the odds of missing the gear go up. When a new driver misses a gear, they have a terrifying tendency to stop watching their mirrors and forget they have a trailer behind them. That's why we drill into the "no shifting in a turn".

The annoying part is waiting for them to get everything straight so they can start grabbing gears.

Out of respect for my driveline and equipment i wont shift over a railroad track and ill let off the fuel pedal and just coast.. Those #### things are so bumpy... But i never understood the rule of never shift over a railroad track... Obvious if you are hazmat and have to come to complete stop. I can understand dont shift from that perspective.. But if ur coming into a rr crossing at say 40mph . even if you miss a gear and get stuck in neutral you sre still going to continue forward at the same pace as when you were in gear

They don't want you to stall the truck or need to wait for your clutch brake while trying to avoid an oncoming train which has no chance of stopping.

It has caused several deaths in the past and with most of these rules is based on blood.

I've driven Auto-Shift Trucks That, at times, Shifted UP or DOWN crossing R.R.TRAX, shifted DOWN/UP making Right turns. Left Turns Offered Few Minor Problems.
Autoshift = very narrow rpm window in "man-u-wail" mode (referencing 2018 and back models).

For New Drivers: It Doesn't Matter What Gear You're In When The Landing Gear Ceases Momentum on R.R. Crossings.
DO NOT CROSS R.R. Tracks When The Road Resembles An Inverted V, Or A CLEAR SIGN designating Such DANGER.

youtube offers countless EXAMPLES, as well, I guess, does tik-tok and other apps.

That sign just means you need a running start.

    kidding of course.

I slow down for most recent crossings, hell some of en barely have pavement it’s like driving over a 6x6 hit to fast and your head hits the roof
