Kids had a greater chance of survival in that mess, being small and more flexible
Hope they pull through

Ever wonder where a doctor that finished last in his class goes to work? Right, Docs in a box or the nearest VA facility.
How about major personality disorders? We had a resident at our local VA clinic who was rendered almost catatonic with Asperger's Syndrome. We thought was Asperger's anyway. It was hard to tell because all he could do when faced with any kind of pressure based decision was to stare at the floor and mumble in his native language. We're not sure what his native language was either because his English never surfaced long enough to really communicate with him.
I was just an ambulance driver so I didn't have to deal with him much but I heard the stories from those who did. He wandered off one day, left his car and his apartment, and was never seen again. I don't think anybody looked very hard.
We had an ER nurse who couldn't function if she couldn't self medicate. Booze was her favorite but any of the tranqs would do. They kept her behind the counter updating charts and answering the phone. That worked for the first six hours of her shift because the second six hours were spent sleeping in a janitor's closet .
The pharmacists had to be watched every time they filled a prescription. It was common practice to double check all their work. The opioid inventory was never resolved and even with a constant state of audit stuff went missing that was never accounted for. We'd get people right out of pharmacy school who were waiting for their Walgreens job or a position at a real hospital to open up. They had a high stress job that didn't pay anything and they were worked half to death. How would your attitude be?
I used to feel sorry for the nurses. They'd show up fresh out of school all full of enthusiasm and a real desire to do a good job. Their idealism got trampled right into the mire of governmental red tape and incompetent co workers. You could tell when they gave up, the light in their eyes would click off and they'd start using their floor time to get their resumes updated. We couldn't keep the good ones and the bad ones never left.
I'm sure there are VA facilities somewhere that are staffed by talented and dedicated people. I've just never been to one.InTooDeep, Feedman, LoSt_AgAiN and 12 others Thank this. -
