Younger brother Mike was killed by a drunk driver while I worked there; very sad, only in his early 30s, was engaged to be married at the time. Older brother Dave kept it going, recently sold it to some guy who liked it and promised to keep the same menu.
Unfortunately because Iowa became famous for its first in the nation caucuses after Jimmy Carter won there in '78, all of the politicians started coming there in the late 80s. I had moved on by then, but the Hamburg Inn became Des Moines Register famous for its coffee bean poll for candidates, and almost every hopeful makes an appearance there at some point. Glad I was gone before that started.
Great food, though. All the hamburger, pork, chicken, eggs, and milk is sourced locally, and was way before that became cool. There was a Mennonite lady who used to deliver fresh eggs in her blue Buick when I was there. Beef for the burgers were ground fresh every week, pork tenderloins and chicken also cut and breaded there, home fries boiled and chopped in the back room. Sometimes I would be assigned to peel the hot taters. Small place, seating for maybe 30, probably over half the business was to go orders. Highly recommend if anyone can get downtown Iowa City. Not truck friendly though. Avoid during presidential campaign season unless you like those kinds of people.
