On the Baggett theme... We used to haul bale cotton from the MS delta, AR, LA, and SE MO to the mills in SC, NC, and VA. We were Riddell out of Canton, MS and run with Marble City Cotton Express/Sylacauga, AL and a couple of other loose ones. Back then with 195 IH and 22 Whites, and B42 Mack's, we were not the powerhouse you all are now. But we compensated...
US 78 too hilly thru B'Ham so we run US 82 to Centreville and up to US 78 at Anniston junction, then light out back on 78 up Heflin mountain and it was hop, skip, jump to Atlanta.
Baggett was hauling explosives from Dupont in B'ham up to the VA /w/VA mines. Running little tilt cab White straight trucks w/about 18 ' alum boxes.
They had just started and had a few done of "truck lanes" on some of the hills from Heflin on in. So we cotton haulers are apeing down thru there like broke dixk guineas and round a curve to come up on a Baggett toddling along at his explosives' safe speed... Not quite to the third lane so we would just ease up on him and double head him to the 3rd, drop, catch one less and go on up the grade. The payoff was seeing him stick his arm out his window and wave for us to stop. They had a lowered step rear bumper like a city del truck so had a good fit on decent roads.
Anybody still alive that ever ran for Marble City could tell you about this...

For archives of grades... Go in to Centreville on US82 and enter town on the old roadway. Down in there is a very steep upgrade about 2 blocks long.
In the middle 50's; way before the bypass 4 lane, 90% of the drivers thru there stopped at bottom, stuck it in his #1 and smoked or drank thermos coffee to
the top. US 29, north out of Athens off the river bridge, was a practice hill for Centreville. (And you dropped them 2 at a time on it.)

I knocked an AO1 on his butt on the flight deck of the Chucky V for screaming— kinda forgot about the part where you can’t quit or get fired — reality set in pretty hard when I had a visit with the Skipper

Little red rag on head in shorts is earnestly telling the big guy in overalls that it not a big thing, your insurance will probably cover it 100%...
