The plane he was flying was a long-EZ. Designed by Burt Rutan. Rutan was a well known aircraft designer and manufacturer. The aircraft could be purchased as a finished product or plans to build. There were even kits of this model sold. The Rutan company has closed down. Burt is mostly retired.

I am happy to report that she made it back to The Good Life City unharmed. That said, I personally will never be the same.

Followed him for quite a while. He was an interesting person. Some very ingenious designs.
Wanted a longEZ for a long time. Just never could put the cash together.
Then life started to change and the idea just became unfeasible.
