Spilling gasoline in your car interior is a tough situation, but you can absolutely tackle it with the right steps. Here's a comprehensive guide to clean it up and eliminate the smell:
Step-by-Step Cleanup Process
1. Act Quickly
- Blot the spill with old rags or paper towels to soak up as much gasoline as possible.
- Avoid rubbing, which can spread the stain deeper into the fabric.
- Open all doors and windows.
- Park in a sunny spot to help evaporate lingering fumes.
- Use a box fan to circulate air through the cabin.
- Mix a solution of baking soda, white vinegar, and hot water (equal parts).
- Scrub the area with a nylon brush or rag.
- Let it sit for 15–30 minutes, then blot dry with clean rags.
- Repeat if needed.
Try one or more of these odor absorbers:
- Baking soda: Sprinkle generously over carpets and seats, leave overnight, then vacuum.
- Coffee grounds: Place in open containers around the car.
- Activated charcoal: Excellent for absorbing chemical odors.
- Citrus peels: Leave orange or lemon peels in the car for a fresh scent.
- Gasoline fumes can linger in the HVAC system. Replacing the filter helps prevent recirculation of the smell.
- As a last resort, an ozone generator can neutralize stubborn odors. Follow safety instructions carefully.
