Mesquite is pretty harsh for some. I love it personally. I think your on the right track. Use charcoal, let the grill settle for 45min to a hour before cooking and try a handful of hickory. It's a smoother smoke than mesquite.

I’ve called places like that, that also broker out freight, if you use your trailer, they’ll want to pay less.
Offer you 40/ton, tell you you’ll have to DH to MS to get their trailer, to dh back to load, if you say you’ve got a trailer, the price goes to 32/ton...
