So if a company prohibits you from wrenching on their trucks, does that mean you are only allowed to be a SWH?
I don't know Schneider policy on me doing fixes beyond lights and blinker fluid. But honestly, unless they are going to pay me more I don't want to assume the risk and liability of fixing something incorrectly. I know cars very well, trucks I have a solid idea, but am still learning a lot.
Plus, beyond the occasional light or fluid top...maybe an airline or pigtail swap, what the else can a driver fix? I mean, as much as I want, I don't have a spare DD12 transmission under my bunk as a spare

One time the clutch linkage came apart in a truck. So I crawled under, found the problem, and put a nail in place of a cotter pin that fell out. Guess what the owner said? "Why is there a nail in the linkage, there's supposed to be a cotter pin?" I just walked away and someone else told him how I saved a six yards of concrete and a service call. Never got a tank you. So now I just drive, if someone else doesn't like that they can suck a lemon.Toomanybikes and 28 Thank this.

Suck a lemon....not how I saw that ending before I scrolled down lol.
I don't really expect gratitude, especially from a mega carrier. I just don't want me fixing something turning into "well, since you did this, and you weren't supposed to, any further damage is your liability".
I have a sneaking suspicion that to CTA for liability and costs, any company will throw you under whatever you try and help them fixDominick253 Thanks this. -
Landing gear handle. Happen to borrow one that was laying around doing nothing. Stuff like getting brakes unfrozen. Wiring issue, having to wire a new line to make clearance light work.
Air seat lost a hose, had to use a vice grip to clam it shut and drive 3 hours to OC. Same with air lines....clam it so I can move it to a nearby shop. Tandem handle gone, lots of zip ties and bungee to move it.
Starter was bad, and I was blocking a fuel island. Hammer it and it magicly work.
Door handle broke and I was tired of using the passenger side to get in and out, open the door cover and zip tie the locking rod and just use another zip tie to make a handle to make it unlock.
Many other stuff you can improvise to make it work and keep rolling. Breaking down for the Littles thing cost u moneyallniter, Pete jockey and AModelCat Thank this. -
All of that proves you are mechanically inclined, or mabey even a mechanic. It doesnt mean you (not you specifically, general usage) are not a wheel holder.
Point is, somebody might be very handy but still be a stupid SWH.

Keep an extra landing gear handle and a pad lock under your bunk...learned that the hard way lol....never again will I crank landing gear with my screwdriver.

You couldn't just "borrow" one nearby?santanzchild and tucker Thank this.

Must be, they kept falling off my flatbed...

I put the missing handle on the dvir for my trailer when I dropped it...didn't want another driver getting screwed by a trailer without a handle and it wasn't reported.
I found a crank handle on the side of I70 when we blew a steer tire. Serendipitous I guess...it has been with us for a year now, and been used more than I care to admit. Also works great for knocking frozen breaks lol -
I found I was missing a mudflap on my trailer at a customer. From the looks of it I must have yanked it off backing as the bolts were still there. They had their own trucks and shop and I asked if they had an old mat or something' similar I could rig as a mudflap until I got to El Paso. He hooked me up with an old mudflap spare from the shop free of charge. Had to trim it to fit but within an hour I was rolling nice and legal.allniter and Diesel Dave Thank this.
