My last time in a big truck was 2003. I'm going to start over with someone soon, don't know when or where. With 17 years of LTL and 17 months OTR plus using a drivers card when doing HHG for American Red ball, I think the twenty years behind the wheel gives me some clout, or does it.
I never went to a trucking school, I started with a local company in CA and worked my way up to a driver at that company. They signed me off for my class one at that time. (1980) Its all iv done most of my life, but what will it be like now, after being out of the seat for more than seven years.
How much money do I need to save up just to deal with the first three to six months of BS at one of the starter companies. It would be nice to find a company with no slip seating and some good accounts, and maybe a clean truck on the inside, and one that runs on the outside. Really I do not want to get stuck with a young kid with a few years under his belt so he can use me as a whipping boy just to get his miles, an older mentor would be better I think. The CSA10 does this have anything to do with old x drivers like me, any info would be helpful, Thanks.![]()
What is it like now ?

My last time was 1985 so it has been 25 years since I have been behind the wheel. I decided I was not going to pay thousands of dollars to some school to teach me something I already knew and had done for almost 6 years so I went rented the truck and trailer took the cdl test. Now I have my cdl but no one would hire me because no recent exp and did not go to truck driving school. Not being one to give up without a fight I took advice from some of the good people who post here and found me an owner operator to work for. Been driving for him a couple of months now and am very happy with how it is going. When we first talked he said he did not care how long it had been since I last drove, he said it was like riding a bike you don't forget ( and he was right ). Just an option you might want to think about, no orientation no trainer no employee hand book with 10,000 rules, just climb in the cab and go to work. As the saying goes there is always more than one way to get something done, Good luck and be safe

Not much different except more regulations, and new Hours of Service that you'll need to learn. However you'll be considered an inexperienced driver and most companies won't hire you cause you have been out of the truck for more than a yr or 2. The ones that will are the smaller ones..

I took a couple years break from driving and found no place wanted to hire me because of that.
I found a driver leasing service, like a temp service for drivers and did a year with them.It was 90% local work and a little OTR...
It got my one year of recent experience back on the books..FEELTHEWHEEL Thanks this.
