What is the Point of Unions?

    Sure they are. Some states have closed shop laws. If there is a union in the shop then the company has no choice but to be a closed shop.

    Group of ppl with similar skills that get together to conspire to be as lazy as possible and drive up the cost of their service.

    Negativity is nothing but contagious. Not only that, the ones who do produce will quickly grow to resent being asked to pick up the slack of the ones who don't, and that offends me more than anything.

    Yes I did get the letters, I put them in the trash along with everything else I get from them. I also remember how the business agents drove around in new Lincolns every year and the millions of dollars handed out to their mobster cronies.

    Here, here Mack! I work for YRC here in NY, and we have the pre-madonas few, those lifers that do what they want! Stay on 8am shape so they can book off whenever the mood strikes them!

    You have to remember how America was back in the 1890's and prior. Well, prior Americans pretty much grew their own crops, raised their own livestock and chickens, butchered their own meat and were pretty much self sufficient.

    Along came the Industrial Revolution and people started migrating in from the country to the city. These poor people were taken advantage of in the worst way by the Man. The Man said you will work 12-16 hours a day for $1.00 dollar. Don't like it? Go back to the farm.

    Remember, there was no unemployment, no social security, no retirement bennies, no 401k's, also no federal taxes either though. \\\

    But with the Man taking such harsh advantage, the people banded together and got better conditions for themselves. Shorter hours and one day less worked in the week meant a sort of pay raise. In the construction side, if a worker got hurt with an incredible injury, there was no health insurance, no workman's comp, the guys passed a hat and collected cash to give to the wife so she could feed the kids.

    These were the true honest beginnings of the Union in America. What it morphed into is a sad shame from where it all started. There was a point where the Union had more power than the Man but it appears the pendulum is swinging back to the Man's favor now.

    Here's a series of thoughts/questions to you anti union guys :

    Why is it OK for an owner operator (or wanna be l/p guy with a choice of freight lanes) to hold out for better rates? Or to refuse to run for less than $1.50 (or whatever arbitrary number) per mile?

    Why do certain anti union company guys scream high heavens about NOT working for less than 50 cents per mile? (Again, arbitrary number)

    Certain regional guys claim they won't work for less than $55,000/year....


    The O/O NEGOTIATES a better rate or looks for a better lane. He/she REFUSES the run with the less than sensible pay.

    The company guys/gals find another job or speak with their fleet owner/boss about a pay increase - essentially they are negotiating their future.

    What's the issue with a group of people COLLECTIVELY BARGAINING for their future? We should strive to raise the standards, NOT lower them.

    Again, as I've said before, I've got nothing against a person that chooses to work union free. I can name several non union outfits that I'd personally consider if something happened at my current place of employment (Ashley, GFS, Dayton Freight immediately come to mind). My issue is with the folks that talk smack on organized labor and then either whine about their compensation package or brag about how they negotiated a better environment for themselves.
