Exactly. "loaded miles" or "backhaul" is brokerspeak. It costs me the same amount to move the truck regardless of geographical direction or loaded or not. Those are scummy brokers that use those tactics against the ignorant.

Rates are always in flux. Just because somebody comes in and does a load I run all the time for a dollar a mile less doesn't mean that is the new set rate on that lane. Stuff changes. And I don't really care if somebody comes in and hauls something for cheap. They can knock themselves out. I'm not sharing my info with competitors. They can remain uninformed as far I'm concerned.

Now friends or people at the company I'm leased to is different. If somebody like that is running freight out of places I haul from and they reach out to me I'll let them know what kind of money they can shoot for. Even so their result may vary. They might do better or worse. Rates aren't set in stone. But complete strangers are on their own.

I accidentally dropped a rate con on the ground walking up to the office to check in last summer. Another O/O walking behind me picked it up. the company he's leased with always had a few trucks on the same steady we do. I know what what he was getting paid through the grapevine (be friendly with the help, you get lots of inside info by accident) was 950 and us 1500.

I know he saw the rate when he picked it up off the ground and handed it back. Didn't say anything but he was backed in next to me and boy he sure didn't look happy. Nice way to find out your company is really sticking it to ya taking a huge chunk off. Haven't saw him in a while

Yep and that happens more often than it doesn't. Honest carriers are rare. I don't know how some people sleep at night the way they steal from others.

    6 weeks later...
I am already mis dignified myself by perceiving 3 - 4 dol per mile (500 or more) rates as a luxurious rarity.
Amazing, how soon the mind perception adjusts to new reality; from the mood of prosperity to escaping misery.

First vans, soon after reefers, inevitably open decks and then everything else, spot or contract freight.
What is your minimum rate now... the rate below dignity?

Myself, I can't train my mind yet...still, siting at home this is the 3rd week.

Just keep sitting if you can afford to.

I turned down $4k TTT for a day run (OD) yesterday because I’m being lazy.

My previous answer to this thread still stands, and like @rollin coal said - minimum metric he reviews is monthly.

I’m guilty of micro analysis too. Try to not let it rule your every move - leads to “Analysis Paralysis “

I was home for over 4 weeks. This week started rough, but is ending up better than I thought. I’ve somewhat reluctantly adjusted my mindset. Have to grateful for what I can get. Only way to stay positive. Helps to be busy and focused on a challenge. I get too negative not working. Start worrying about things too much.
