When I was a young driver I used to think up 'what could or might happen' while I was driving.
I still do as a fairly new CDL driver.

If you think about a situation before you get into that situation, you will be more prepared to deal with it when it happens.
    It won't be a "Holy ####ing ####" !!" situation.

That driver panicked and hit the brakes very hard, and the trailer was coming around.
Well, NEVER hit the brakes that hard unless going in a straight line!
That is true for a car, and even more so when a trailer is pushing behind you.

I also practice some things while alone on the open road.

Do you know that a quick left to right to left swerve can be either safe or fatal, depending on how you control the steering wheel?
If you pause in the middle, for even half a second or less, between each left-right-left turn of the wheel, it gives the suspension of the vehicle a lot more time to adjust the equilibrium between points of stress.
That fraction of a second pause sets you up to do the next move safely, because it more balances the suspension of the vehicle.

But you have to keep your mind about you.
You have to be aware, and thinking at all times.

    Grijon and Lepton1 Thank this.

I know my company reads every single one of my posts. And I like that, I even give them crumbs so they know exactly who I am. wmt...

And no matter how prepared you think you are, they'll be moments that catch you off guard. I know the professional driver will never admit to anything different.
Even I have a pretty safe driving record, but that one thread proved that having no accidents was a fluke and anyone could do it.. :(

I thought the oncoming driver was quite considerate. He thoughtfully got into a slight jackknife to obliterate the tree in the oncoming lane.

It's not often you see that level of courtesy in this country. Must be an Aussie thing.

Gotta commend the guy for his excellent skills, not only had to go around a tree but around a truck in the left lane as well.

The last time I came across a tree in the road around Seeley Lake, the guy behind me lived around the corner and went home and got the chainsaw and we cleared the road ourselves before the cops even got there. That was 2 years ago and it is still laying there.
