Translation: He was previously a trucker, currently is computer technician, and together we're looking at getting into trucking as team drivers. I have a degree in Visual Communications but was laid off and can't find more work in graphic art. I don't want to be a freelancer so I'm going to give this a shot. There are worse things than spending all day with the man I married. :smt058

Back on the road this week, I expect!Blue Screen Thanks this. -
I started off as a CAD Technician out of High School. I had a knack for computers and eventually picked up enough to serve as an IT Manager / Network Engineer. My boss needed a program written and couldn't drag one of his programmers off task to do it so he handed me a 'C' programming book and told me to learn. 30 days later I was writing code and entering my new profession as a Computer Programmer. I stayed in that field for 15 years until the economy tanked and I was laid off. It's nearly impossible to get a job as a programmer now without a bachelors degree so I went into trucking to keep myself afloat.
I've been surprised to find that I actually enjoy the field. I'm annoyed at way that some of the shippers / receivers treat us due to the ####### that like to vandalize their restrooms. Other than that I rather like the care-free lifestyle. It would be nice if the pay were higher but I can't really expect to start at the top of the payscale and it's not my companies fault that I already own a house... until they foreclose on me lol.Blue Screen and Freebird135 Thank this. -

I picked up dead people! YEp! I was a first call. We called ourselves the Vulture club. Always waiting for someone to die. Very interesting job. Down side you see alot of the worst in humanity. Overall I liked it.

Joined Marines out of high school after being jumped by 3 guys one night after work walking home from KFC.
Took all the written tests first few days of boot camp and the computer decided that I would be Motor Transport.
When I got out of the Marines in 1990, I got into union bridgebuilding. Throughout the 90's work was pretty spotty although I did have a 3 year steady work stint with one company , I had the idea to get a class a license so that I at least could have the option of always working when the construction side was slow. I toughed it out and from 2000 - 2008 I was fortunate to work very steady and make great money that whole time to the tune of almost a million dollars gross.
For the past 15 months of unemployment, I've lost both my properties, all my credit rating and feel a huge burden of shame. Got my CDL couple weeks ago and have a plan to start my life over basically. December of this year I will have been 2 years away from construction and eligible to withdraw from one of my trust funds possibly to purchase a tractor cash money and start my own company.
I only have to work 11 more years to get a service pension from my union, but they're talking about taking money from wages now to shore up the pension as well as eliminating early retirements and service pensions. That would put me out to 21 more years of hard labor to retire and I don't think I have it in me. Seen cranes flip over, co-workers hurt and killed. Maybe if the economy turns around in a couple years I will go back to it if the option is there for me to retire at 53 like I want to and still drive truck for a few years to put my kid through college

During HS I worked at a paint & body shop. After that worked at a funeral home as a remover,(accident scenes, suicides etc etc) Also drove a wrecker for a friend's company.
Then I drove a truck for a few years, started a small vintage car restoration shop and drove a truck part time.
Now I drive a truck part time, my primary job is Funeral Director/embalmer.
I closed the resto shop when the economy got bad and now I get to work on my own cars instead of someone else's!
I like working more than one job at a time, I get bored easily and besides- cash is king!
