I'm in my 2nd day of truck driving school and I've noticed already that I could use some extra studying. Right now they've given us the Michigan Commercial Driving Manual.
I want to make it clear that any challenges are on me, not the school. This isn't a lot to read, yet after some parts I've read I don't seem to be comprehending as well as I should be.
It's not like I don't understand any of it. Some of it I'm grasping pretty well.
There's a lot that I'm not though too. Pre-trip inspection, air brakes, and Haz Mat (especially those charts of categories for placards) are giving me the most challenges.
ps: I've taken some of the quizzes from this forum. I'm generally scoring about 50%. The quizzes are great, but I'm not sure what else I could study to do even better.
Thanks in advance for any help.
What would be some good sources for extra study?

Can you have someone help you go over the info. Some people have problems processing info, my son is one of those, he can work on cars, do electrical work, but was rotten in school. He can figure air space for doing sound systems and the size of the box and size of the port needed to get the best sound quality, but math, okay, it was Greek to him.
Try not to confuse yourself jumping around from section to section. Read and reread, answer the questions and try to memorize what you can. Try pulling up other websites with commercial questions for hazmat and the other sections. It might take a couple to get more sampling of what the questions might be like. I believe PA had the best looking booklet for CDL holders, and good format. But do make sure you read the one from the state you are in also.
Try this link for the PA booklet, I hope you have a computer you can pull it up on and either reed or print it out.

Dannyd keep doing the practice tests on here also use YouTube for things like Pretrtip, lots
Of good info available. And when you go to SecrataryofState to test remember that the skip button option will be your best friend. Think you can retake tests 3 times a day also. If it were easy everyone would be doing it! -

Lots of information coming at you quickly but you will have time to learn it. Relax and enjoy the schooling. Get a date to homecoming. Get a group of guys together and raid the girls dorms. You are only young once. But if you lucky that once can last for 60 years.

For starters thanks for the responses. It helped some that today I was in the drivers seat of a truck for the first time. I can at least visualize myself doing it rather than just reading. That helps a fair amount.
The Pa book is similar to Michigan's. I'll see what that one offers. I'll def do some YouTubing. I came across some vids, so that should help too. Seeing it on video in some cases is better than reading. I'll def keep practicing the tests. I want to get them right, but if I'm going to get them wrong it's better to do it here than when I test for real.
As for being young, I can only wish. No, I'm at the age where the music I listen to is performed by Earth, Wind, and Fiber. If I was to raid the girls dorms, they'd think I was some kind of creep and call the cops. Come to think of it, they did that when I raided the dorms 30 years ago too.NavigatorWife Thanks this. -

You can go to YouTube and search any topic: pretrip inspection; sllding tandems; truck driver backing up; how to back up; how to shift a 9/10/13/18 speed transmission; Look up "tekilka29" -- she's been driving for 13 years--nice clips of the road, not instructional. You can plug in the names of trucking companies. There's a film called "Big Rig." There's a movie, "They Drive By Night." Lots of stuff. YouTube is a great resource. -
Looking into Trucking Truths "High Road Training Program". Google it. Tons of great information on there. I used it to study before going into school, and was familiar with a lot of what they taught us in school. It most def put me a step ahead of most people in my class.
Have fun in school, because the real work starts once you're done.
Good luck! -

Hi, I wanted to swing back by and thank everyone who responded. I got (I think) 202 out of 243 on one test. That was the general driving test. That's all the Michigan Q's that are possible for the real CDL test. In other words, I think they draw 70 of those 243 for my test at the Secretary of State.
In the other test I got 23 wrong out of 70. That was in part because I was drawing a blank on what I'd studied before. Like I wasn't sure what a glad hand was. I got confused on some of the "if this brake fails, what happens?" type Q's. They also had Q's on buses. I don't need that section.
The first section when I saw the right answer, I would snap and quickly think "that's right!!" The second part was more a blank. Even seeing the right answers didn't trigger anything. It was nice to take the tests so I can see what I need to study.
I had been going over the PTI pretty hard. I was thinking that was what I needed to know. I definitely need to know it, but not for the Secretary of State's test.
All in all considering I knew pretty much none of this before I'm ok with my progress.
One thing I learned and maybe this can help out the next person if they read this. It's better to study in 20-30 minute blocks than all day. I got that information when I googled memory aids. I noticed a big difference in what I studied Thursday (short blocks of study) vs what I studied Tues and Wed (nose to the books until I was tired).
