Sounds like you'll be a great fit for trucking but there are other ways of staying healthy on the road without having to unload.

If you want to "work" and stay in shape do flatbed. Flatbed is a lot more work then "no touch" freight.

Thank you….I think I've made up my mind to pursue flatbed and tanker……heard both might keep me active and tanker may pay a little more money…..so my research continues…

Interesting….you just make me think of something…..are there trucking companies that concentrate on whole food vendors or produce markets….I'm a vegetarian…..I could get lunch that way….

Go flatbed or tanker. Don't care how tough a person is, at age 50 you will blow out your back unloading freight. "Father time" doesn't discriminate. I know some former grunts, greenbeans, swabbies, etc. that were the epitome of health, but it all catches up sooner or later. Go with moderate physical labor in trucking; chaining, tarping, dragging hoses, climbing on top of tankers; then get the rest of the excercise you need with a more disciplined approach on downtime.

I would suggest food like sysco, but it's local work. And I agreed after doing touch freight to no touch, it's harder to stay in shape. Yes there's some schneider user here who do touch freight but not sure if that's less work than flatbed.

This sounds like excellent advice….Old Army guys feel bullet proof….however….I do feel it more now than I used to….I maintain a pretty aggressive exercise regime but it's safe because the movements are rehearsed and in my muscle memory; I know the movements are not going to hurt me…..on a truck…..or any un-rehearsed activity there is a chance of making the wrong move and getting hurt, especially at my age……again….Great advice….Thanks....

unfortunately both your wants are at odds with each other. it's a fallacy to think that touching a lot of freight(which involves stopping, hence lower miles) will balance out the hours of sitting doing all the miles.

in other words sitting and driving 8 hours will not be negated by a burst of activity for an hour or so. you need to have the see saw tipped toward the activity side and minimize the driving. my suggestion for that would be swift for a kmart account. their store loads are floor loaded, with the exception of a couple of bulk pallets of say water or sand in the nose. you have to touch the rest and it's a good work out, you are setting up the rollers, and then throwing each piece on the rollers. a lot of bending down and picking up of varying number of pounds, reaching and lifting, and trunk twisting. get on with the right company close to a DC and you can do 2 a day, maybe 3 if you work for freight natzi's like i did.

target might have the same setup, but i'm not sure. maybe someone else knows. like an earlier poster said, family dollar and dollar general i think are the same although i thought one of them now switched to carts that you roll off at the store. for those two check out us express as a local driver. hth
