Like some others have said, when I get on the ramp, I hammer down, turn on my turn signal & watch my mirrors or out the door window to see what the traffic is doing & can do. If I cant get on by the end of the ramp, I try to stay around 45 or 50 MPH & run the shoulder.
I can assure you, YOU DO NOT have the right to take over a lane of traffic. YOU DO NOT have the right to merge into someone else's lane. YOU dont own that lane, the person already in that lane owns it. If you cant merge safely, DONT. -
More commonly, I see 4 wheelers that don't understand the concept of merging and/or yielding to the right of way... Notwithstanding, there certainly are some truckers who are clueless as to how to merge/yield when entering. As a professional driver it is more of a challenge to be defensive when approaching an on ramp because of the idiots who will expect you to merge left no matter what to allow them on...

When they did not let you in and running the shoulder it kicks up all the derbies on that shoulder and they back off a bit.

I just turn my blinky thing on, count to 5, close my eyes, and whip it in there! Works every time!

If small vehicles want to be idiots and close in the gap not to let me in, I slowly push them over or make them slam on brakes.Yeah I get the horn and the middle finger but they move over. Pete 379 air cleaners can be scary if one is knocking on your window
