What's the deal with this job?

Center line is a temp agency for trucking companies to essentially lease drivers until they locate good ones.
Major employers have learned that using temp agencies saves them a lot of money in the hiring process by letting them test drive candidates before hiring them in house.
Think of it like this....
You hire Joe, go through all the crap and paperwork to add him to your books.
He works 3 days, and you determine he's not a good fit. So, you let him go.
Now, you gotta do all the termination paperwork, unemployment, etc.
Conversely, you hire Jim through the temp agency.
He works 3 days, and doesn't work out.
You call the agency, tell them send someone else.
You're out a few hundred bucks instead of a couple thousand.

 

We’ve had a driver opening for about that long. Paid hourly, home daily, gravy work. Nobody is interested. We even had one guy (who was very well qualified) show up, went through the entire orientation, passed the drug test, then on the day he was to start driving he called in sick and we never heard from him again.

 

Oh, oh, home and hardware supplies? I wonder if Ace Hardware is getting rid of their trucks too? I have a friend that drives for Ace, and at our local store, I see trucks with Ace trailers but not always an Ace tractor. $28/hour seems right, but these guys unload all kinds of stuff, looks like a pain, like a Dollar General account only worse. With drivers getting harder and harder to find, companies that have trucks sitting, have no choice but to farm it out. End of an era, for sure.

 

it looks like an ad from a temp service, or Driver Leasing company. They provide drivers to companies that don't need/want a permanent employee. Some companies use the service because they can't hire enough permanent drivers.

 

Centerline advertised in my area. They would fly you in, pay you by the hour up to 70 hours a week, put you up in a hotel, and pay you a daily amount for your food on top of the hourly rate. Then, when it's hometime, they fly you back (and the time you spend getting to and from home is paid, plus doesn't count against your time off). With all the Covid crap, they should pay hazard pay for having to deal with wearing a mask the whole time you're dealing with all the airport/airlines bullspit.
