My wife and I are finished with our training, and are taking our CDL test here in MN. I did pass the first time through. But my Wife should have passed twice and has not.... here is why. In the first test, she was trying to down shift as she slowed to go ever an uncontrolled RR crossing, She got a little lost trying to find gears, and was automatically failed because she was not in a gear as she entered the crossing..
Second test she was all the way through and had passed the straight park, and the offset park, but but she got a little kiddy wompass in the alley park, and decided to set up again, all of a sudden the instructor told her that her time was up, and auto-failed her! (5 minutes was up)
Got any other stories out there that might cheer her up and give her a little more confidence as she waits 2 weeks until she is eligible to try again?
Whats the worst or funniest story you have about taking your CDL test???

I took my test in Lee's Summit, Missouri. The first time I went to take the test, I was not allowed to do the driving part, so I had to come back a second time.
The reason I was not allowed to take the driving part. I had no truck available. The man who took the test in front of me panicked when the first started out on the over the road part. The examiner told him to turn left coming out of the parking lot and he had been expecting to turn right. He hit the accelerator and drove straight across the intersection over a curb and into a small lake. No one was injured but I think I laughed so hard that I may have done permanent damage to my spleen.Doublecutter Thanks this. -
Shes not alone, it takes some people a few tries to get it right.
I passed pre-trip test the first time I tested for my CDL and failed skills (backing up into a dock from a 45 degree angle was difficult for me)
passed the skills portion the next time I tested then failed the driving portion due to trying to upshift to 4th gear going uphill and failing.
I failed the driving test a second time due to downshifting but not being able to get it into gear.I didnt kill the truck but had to come to a stop at a red light a short distance ahead and put it into 3rd gear.
The guy from the state told me I did everything just fine but needed to practice shifting a bit more.
I will be testing for the driving portion for the 3rd time this monday. I made sure to buy extra driving time to practice shifting. Good things take time and effort, sometimes its more time than you anticipated.
I'm rooting for your wife, best of luck on her test! -
since I am here I will share one more,
When my wife was taking her second test I was talking to the instructor and he told me about one of the guys in our class that failed. During the pretrip the student pulled the release on the king pin jaws and locked it out. The examiner (who claims he saw the guy release the handle) grabbed the hand brake during the in cab, trailer tug just as the trailer dropped of the skid plate and onto the frame and said, test over!!Last edited: Jan 24, 2014

I failed my skills test the first time. I did the 100' alley and the offset backing just fine. I was doing the 90 degree alley and got it into the alley with just one pull up. I had 2 'get out and looks' I stopped about 5 feet short of the 3' box we needed to be in. Got out, saw the distance. Got back in and backed up what I thought was 6-7 feet. Got out again to look. I had only backed up 4 1/2', so I was 6" from the box. I got back in, backed up what I thought was another foot. I saw the instructor wave so I thought I was done. I pulled the brake and got out again. I went back and I had backed up 3 1/2 feet and hit the cones. I also had gotten out before pulling up, so it was my 3rd get out and look. Automatic fail!! I felt like such an idiot. All I had to do was roll over 6" and I rolled 3 1/2 feet. Dumb ###. That was a long hard remainder of the day at school.... I was really beating myself up.
I passed them all the next day including my road test. I learned a good lesson that day on distance judgement. -

grabbed the what??????? -
When I started my test it started out with the straight line test. The simple one right. The easy one right. Well the instructor said go ahead and get set up and then back all the way till the last set of cones is in front of the nose of the tractor. I was like sure no problem. So I do my backing and get to what I thought was the last set of cones....I honk my horn telling him Im done and then I look out my window and see a set of cones still there....Im like holy #### wtf!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We get a total of 12 points allowed and that cost me 10 right off the bat! Lucky for me I nailed my offset and ally dock with 0 points. I got ####y with the straight back and it almost cost me the test. Cant preach enough and as I see on here a lot GOAL! Get out and LOOK! Or in my case look out the #### window!

glad I did'nt have all that B.S. when I got my license..
written test was all I had to do -
I finished third in a class of 30 at North Carolina Truck Driver Training School in 1964. Had a perfect score in Army driver tests. (served in the Army 1964-67). Drove interstate for a manufacturer-1967. Due to changing residence and employers in 1968, I had to get an Illinois license. There was a Secretary of State office across the road from the roofing plant in Chicago Heights where I was picking up a load. I went in there and flunked the written test.

I have never taken an actual drivers test, only written. MANY years ago.
