I wonder if the company even made more than that with the load.

I'm sure it reduces profit by a substantial margin at least.

I think some of the responses to this thread is most of why my company ( based in Omaha and in business since 1932 ) has mostly gotten away from the meat biz and are picky about where we go with what little meat we do haul .

Yeah, and the lumper system won't end any time soon. It's got to be a profit center for the grocery distribution centers. They win two ways. First, they save by hiring less warehouse employees. Second, they certainly must be getting a percentage kickback of every lumper fee.

There was one grocery warehouse I went to that had it's own employees, no lumpers at all. I think it was in Ohio, but I can't recall the grocer name. It was super fast and efficient.

In the meat biz its racket ..the carrier bills the unloading charges back to the packer , the packer passes it along to the buyer .

Yep the places that I have been to that don't use lumpers have all been pretty fast. I found it strange that some Walmart DCs use lumpers. My company sends the bill to the broker so we don't lose money.

I have hauled dump and low bed for years, the waiting around is quite an adjustment
However, now as an owner, I cannot justify the extra expense and Wear and tear of hauling heavy to make the same dollar value, we do a lot of night delivery’s so I can just sleep on site or in a door

    Coffey and alds Thank this.
