To throw a monkey wrench in the Gross/Net discussion...my company has a unique 'per diem' calculation. We aren't paid per diem, but before they calculate our federal and FICA taxes, the subtract $59/day per diem amount, for every day away from the company facility (but only for days the driver is under a load). So I gross one amount, they subtract the per diem(only on paper) to show taxible mileage income, then add any accessorial pay like stops and hourly work, then calculate the taxes for the net pay.

It works like this. 3000 miles X .50 = $1500. 5 days per diem is $295. So it's $1500 - $295 = $1205. I had 4 paid stops @ $30 ea. So it's $1205 + $120 = $1325. $1325 is the taxable income(a.k.a.adjusted gross) according to my company. Most companies would just do simple math and come up with $1620 gross and let you deal with the meal allowance/per diem at tax time.

The up side to my company doing it this way is I don't loan the government extra interest free money, the down side, it makes my income look smaller when I try to apply for a loan or if I get hurt or laid off/fired it would lower my unemployment/disability payment. Plus it puts less in my social security, so I have to deposit more in a private retirement account.

So sometimes a simple question like 'how much do you make' isn't so simple to answer.
