Made it to Fife, WA. Opened up with the Yahoo home page to see an image of wildfires in CA. The report said I-5 both directions were closed through Weed due to fire burning into the town. http://news.yahoo.com/hundreds-flee-2-california-wildfires-075952861.html Checked the highway conditions on the Cal-Trans web site, and it looks like the interstate is open again. Very ugly in CA and OR...Fresno has a large fire, Pollock Pines (US 50) has one, now the one in/around Weed, two "complex" fires (meaning a series or group of fires started by lightning that have joined together) West of Weed closer to the coast [Happy Camp Complex is the biggest], crossing into OR just south of Eugene the smoke starts from a fire outside of Oakridge (OR 58 about 10 miles east of I-5), still in heavy smoke up into Portland from a fire that started Sunday by target shooters outside of Estacata (between I-84 and US 26) all tall timber.

What is really crazy is the news agencies are claiming that the extensive wildfires in the west is due to the continuing drought...but no mention of the dumbarse tree-huggers that have convinced the courts that clearing of the duff (natural buildup of leaves and needles and cast off branches) and the thinning/removal of dead and/or diseased trees (most commonly the CA bark beetle along with other natural bugs, parasites, and organisms) have been completely stopped. Maybe with this fire situation we are living through, these one issue "focus groups" can somehow figure out that Foresters and loggers actually know what is best for a forest.

The majority of these fuzzy faced tree huggers live in a big city somewhere far away from the forests that they claim to save. They do not see, on a day to day basis, the results of their actions. And of course the media is quick to pander to them.
The sad thing is, that it isn't just private groups. Part of it is the federal government. Where you have the one agency, USFS, doing their best to actually do a decent job of management, you have the USNPS who are actively engaged in not permitting any trees to be cut for any reason, nor any brushing, nor any duff clean up. It's got to be "natural" according to the parkies, or it is no good.
So when you have the national parks, butting up against the national forests, you have two agencies, both federal government, with two completely different ways of handling things. This is the major reason that we have seen so many "controlled burns" on the national parks, that have gotten away from them.
