I had my class a permit (Kansas) and was being trained by my dad while he was working for a very small company. Drove for about a month pulling an end dump and was almost ready to take the test and he was fired and decided that he didn't want to drive anymore, so there goes my trainer. Now my permit is expired (still have a couple months to be able to test, 6 months from date of issue to test but permit is only valid for 3 months) and I'm not sure where to go from here. I've looked into a few schools and company sponsored training and really looking at Prime. I have about $1000 saved up at the moment, can't really afford to outright go to a school. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Where to start? Previous training fell through

Go to swift or CR England and get your license for "free".
As soon as you get the hard copy run as fast as you can from themCanned Spam, audeygdad and TROOPER to TRUCKER Thank this. -
Errrrrrrr . . .TROOPER to TRUCKER Thanks this.

They are hardly free, and even if you run you still owe them. But if you buckle down and think heck I can stomach anything for a year if I get paid and experience to move, then look into it. If you do go that route, keep your money in your pocket and pay them back on their terms. They may get bad mouthed but many make successful careers from a Swift starting point.

We had a couple of guys in my CRE class that did just that. It makes sense if you have something else lined up and don't mind paying them back over time.Giuseppe Ventolucci Thanks this.

I started at CRE, was 11 years ago, had an excellent trainer. I paid cash, didn't go in the hole, as soon as I had 3 months in, went to JBHunt.
They do have A LOT of hot women in Utah though.77fib77, x1Heavy and Giuseppe Ventolucci Thank this. -
If you go Prime, consider tanker division. Prime tanker is food grade, not hazmat.
Lots of good paying jobs in tankers for drivers with 12 months experience. After Prime you could go to Girton Propane Service in Clay Center,KS or Foodliner which has a few terminals in KS and many others.Last edited: Jun 26, 2016
Riffman, trucker3rdgen and G13Tomcat Thank this. -
I got my license through CRE, great training, weird people attending school but they do make sure you know what you're doing out there on the road. If it wasn't for the pay, I'd still be working there.
On a side note, I still have an excellent credit history !G13Tomcat and Dave_in_AZ Thank this. -
That's actually why I was leaning towards prime was for tanker. Didn't realize it was only food grade but that's more along the lines of what I want anyways. As far as CRE and swift go, there are a lot less options and just didn't appeal nearly as much as prime, thanks for the advice, I'm going to continue my research and I'll let you all know what I decide to do.
Chinatown Thanks this.
