I'm just starting the pre-hire process (I take my DMV road test next week). The only issue on my MVR is a suspension from 2010 due to a screwup with my insurance company that caused a lack in coverage, therefore a suspension from DMV. I was working from home at the time and did not drive much, so I drug my feet on getting it straight. I did not have the money to fix it until about 8 months later. I've kept it all straight since then and only have one speeding ticket from 2008 (66 in a 55). No other issues in the last 10 years or more and no accidents EVER.
The only 'criminal' issue I have is that I was stopped for a nit-picky improper turn in 2003 and had an open beer in the car. I was not drunk and did not receive a DUI. I was two miles from home and had left a friend's house with the beer. It was a misdemeanor and $120 fine which I paid on time.
I have passed several employment background checks in the past, and also passed background checks for firearms purchases, concealed carry, U.S. Passport, and Hazmat.
I have already been rejected by Werner and Schneider.
I am filling out applications online and am wondering if I should be calling instead so that I can talk to a real person and properly explain my situations. On a few online apps, I had to answer YES to "have you ever been found guilty of an offense involving alcohol or drugs", without having an option to specify.
Can anyone with a similar situation give me some advice? If anyone knows of decent companies that will hire me, please list. I'm in Virginia.
Thanks for reading.

Start at the top and work your way down. You may have to work at a "scum sucking bottom feeder" company for a year before you can get into the company you want, but that's the price of making stupid mistakes in the driving industry.
Most likely, the problem is your suspension. A lot of places consider a suspension a bar to employment for 7-10 years. A year of driving, with good performance (no lates, tickets, accidents, and such) would go a long way toward knocking a few years off that requirement.CaptainKirk and mje Thank this. -
