Mercedes Benz Own Freightliner / Western Star, & It won't be long when they have a Common Engine across all 3 Brands.
The same as Volvo, Mack & UD..

I would like one day to walk into say a Kenworth with 200,000 cash, on the desk "THUMP!"

Build me this, that something else and yes those. Put it all in with that CAT or whatever engine too.

Don't tell me I cannot have this that something else and those with just this engine. That's BS... It's my truck order, you build it and take my money.

What part of that don't they understand? (The truck dealers and builders?)

So basically Cummins is the only strictly engine manufacturer these days that sells to truck manufacturers.
Funny how Freightliner will let you order a Cummins instead of Detroit though?!?

Reminds Me of comments heard over years about Cummins being the only Truck engine Cats being for Heavy equipment and Detroit’s being for Tug boats. Seems like Mack could have really cash in here.Their market share dropped and now owned by Volvo? Mercedes Daimler? Fiat? What’s the world coming to? Pretty soon Toyota or Kia will own GM

Detroit Diesel was it own company back in the 90s and early 2000. Just like Cummins is today. Daimlerchrysler bought them in 2000 for $700 million or the news say they got 78 percent of the stock. So they stopped selling Detroit engines to other truck makers plus nobody wanted to help keep Freightliner in business.

Good example of my point. You do know Ford and GM share the same transmission in a good chunk of their cars?
Intrigation is one possibly, just not the only one.

Same reason you can't get a paccar in a freightliner or a volvo in a peterbilt...

But the difference is you used to be able to get a Detroit in a Peterbilt.

Like others have said. Its greed plain and simple. When l bought my Pete in 2000 l would have had to pay a premium of 5 grand to get a Detroit in it. Almost all Petes ordered in at that tine had Cats in them. Before that l would guess at least 30% were Detroit powerd. The big winner in this deal imo is Western Star. If you want a traditional style truck with a Detroit theyre the only game in town.

When they're running the MP8 is a strong engine...but problematic. I have had 2 sets of injectors(and the 1st set rebuilt), EGR code issues and a persistant DPF error that no dealer has been able to fix, plus my check engine light plays peek-a-boo a couple dozen times a week...and that is all this calendar year (in a 2016 w/350k miles).

I want my old 12.7 Detroit back...
