I was on a job site in 1978 working on a mobile home. I watched them deliver it.
I was told by the owner operator it was expensive to get my own authority. So I didn't pursue a license.

10 years later. I hired on to a mobile home dealer as a carpenter. 2nd day on the job the escort driver showed up drunk. Boss looked at me and said "you're the new guy get in the car"

I've always liked driving, this was great.
3 months later the boss said they were going to hire another toter driver.
I asked if I could have the job. He gave me 2 months to get a CDL.
Got my learner's permit. 2 weeks later boss asked if I thought I could pull a house.

We had a triple wide going 300 miles. So I delivered the small piece (14'wide-14' tall-40'long) with him in the passenger seat. I have never sweated so profusely in my life. A/C on high. My hands were cold my shirt was soaking wet.
I was hooked. Next week I got my regular CDL.
It was easy to test, I used my toter 22' long truck with a 16' utility trailer.

It's been 20 years. First 10 pulling houses. Last 10 step deck doing oversize when I can.

Now I run where and when I want. This year I'll have 20 weeks off , the most ever.
I get to visit family and friends, Oregon, Washington, New York, West Virginia, South Carolina, Colorado. Montana.
I enjoy the work I do. It's not a job and never has been.
    I've had a blessed career.
It was never planned, I'll do this until I find something better, hahaha.

I wanted to be a piano player in a bordello, but that old guy wouldn’t retire.
When he finally did, I realized I didn’t know how to play a piano, and they had put a jukebox in there instead.
So, there I was, all broken hearted, no job.. no prospects..
So on a whim I figured I could drive my old stick shift pickup, so why not.

I think I should’ve learned the piano instead, would’ve made more money in the end and more enjoyment in life.
Nobody messes with the bordello’s piano player.

customer service sux,(store mgr), factory management ,(quality control), sucked. I'm not a people person for long periods of time.

filled in driving straight trucks while a mgr and knew that was it.

    solitude is nice.

My Father drove for 30 yrs. So I was familiar with the good and the bad. I’ve driven Trucks longer than him now. Hard to believe. I owe him a lot of credit. Although he tried to persuade me otherwise. Once he saw I was determined, he helped me get my CDL, using his Company Truck for the road test. He had a lot of confidence in Me. When others were discouraging. I was Lucky to have him for a Father. I’ve always dreaded any other Job I’ve had. I like Driving. Trucks, and most of what goes along with it. I don’t like the regulation, but understand it’s a necessity. Having a Job that’s in demand is the best part. Never had to look far to find a Job.
