LTL is better because we are bad mofos. Get our crap done, Know how to back trailers, Know the vendors and sleep with OTR drivers wives.
P.S Have to Support the knocked up OTR wives. That's why we are paid so well as a company driver.
Joking aside, LTL is stressful. Jack of all transport trades except transporting kiddies in a school bus and hauling over weight machinery.. It' not mayberry.
ETA: RR made this great LTL thread.

blairandgretchen and OPUS 7 Thank this. -
In the beginning I enjoyed it, I enjoyed seeing and even doing new things.
However now that I have a year in I've been to all but 3 states in the continental USA and I'm finding myself on the same highways and fuel stops over and over again, that's even with switching companies.
It makes me sick to be seeing the same places over and over again, the thrill I once had of doing OTR has worn off.
I've already seen the country.. now what?
Actually I'm thinking linehaul is the best choice in trucking simply due to pay for what you do. You get paid more than most everybody else. Just the same if not more than doing P&D which is more work. Also it's around the pay of car haulers and they do a whole lot more hard work. Sure some car haulers do pay more but not by much to justify all the extra work.
It's not about being lazy or greedy... it's about being smart. -
yep, you found out the same thing i did, when i was otr. you dont go to exciting places, or get to run nice drives. you r going to be in the same crap routes for the same crap freight, in an industrial park full of litter and ditch lemonade....

It took about 3 years for us to figure it out. I'd taken 2,000 odd pictures of this beautiful country, and then seen all the same places over and over. And then the equation of MAX CPM times MAX MILES in SHORTEST TIME began gnawing on us.
We were with Freymiller and they offered us the doubles gig pulling Watkins, Estes, and then Saia trailers. We got talking to the company teams at the terminals we were going to and the pay difference then was 40cpm(us) to 52cpm (them).
Shortly thereafter we jumped ship.
Sure - I get tired of I40 out to Riverside, and I'm preparing for a change, challenge and chill out a bit - BUT, I can't imagine how much we wouldn't have accomplished in the 7 years till now, and still be in the same burnt out driver mindsets continually spending 4-12 weeks on the road.
Like I said - each to their own - if they really enjoy OTR after 20 years, and it suits them for whatever reason, then more power to them. We just figured it out and changed course.
It warms my heart to see younger (mid 20's) couples that start up here. There's not many of them - but I know they'll probably be setting themselves for a great future starting earlier.
I'm rambling again, but - bottom line - good for you having figured it out and honestly assessing your job future and asking the right questions. -
I live in a small town in Iowa. Nearest big city is an hour in any direction. So ltl isn't a option unless I wanna commute 2 hours everyday, plus do 14 in the truck. Be just enough time to sleep and go back. I'm already off every weekend. Maybe if I lived right next to a ltl company id think about it but not worth the commute. Plus I already make $20.40 an hour driving.
