I keep seeing this claim by people that somehow this enforcement is “bigotry”. Actually it’s common sense. How is a driver supposed to make any safe decisions if they can’t read the signs or understand what a DOT cop is telling them?
The English requirement has been on the books for a long time. Unfortunately some dimwit at FMCSA decided it was a good idea to address the “driver shortage” by allowing non English speaking drivers to get CDL’s and owner op authority (Amazon contractors) and now the industry is flooded with these people. Just about anywhere I go I’m the only driver that speaks English.
I deal with Shipping & Receiving clerks who are fed up at dealing with these “drivers”. Same for truck stop employees as well. I see it in the increasingly hostile attitudes towards me because my profession is now looked down upon more than ever. I’ve had friends and family ask me “WTH is wrong with you truckers??”… especially after the increasing headlines where one of those drivers is involved in pile ups. That recent mess in Austin TX is a prime example.
On the road I’ve been seeing countless instances of unsafe driving by these “foreigners”, speeding and acting reckless through work zones & hazardous weather/road conditions, flying through truck stop lots, backing into other trucks, etc.
Rates have been in the toilets because these foreign owner op contractors working for peanuts when they branch off from companies like Amazon, Super Ego and other unscrupulous “lease purchase” companies.
It’s long past time for something to be done, and FMCSA’s failures throughout the past 20+ years have now resulted in an industry flooded with poorly trained drivers who cabt even read the simplest road signs, and shouldn’t even be allowed to operate a bicycle let alone a semi truck.
