I was pulling an empty Rocky set the other day near Livingston Montana on I-90. Everything went fine till I got closer to town, then there were 81 mph wind gusts with 50 mph sustained. It scared the crap out of me and I threw on my hazards and went to a crawl. The truck passing me looked like he was about to flip, his left side tires were already off the ground. I straddled the rumble strip to compensate my trailer sway on my rear trailer. I took the first in-town pull off I could find... Which worked out great since they had the west-bound lane of the interstate shut down.

A lot of people don't realize that it gets hurricane force out west sometimes! Hell even can get as strong as an F1 tornado!

Besides driving you need to take other precautions in the wind also. Be very careful opening your door and getting in and out of the truck. Depending on the direction of the wind it can either rip the door off the hinges or slam closed breaking a leg! You also want to make sure all your paperwork and trash and such are secured otherwise when you open the door your bills could end up in Iowa! Sounds ridiculous but I had it happen and both my wife and I chased paperwork for 20 minutes across parking lots and pastures!

Also be very careful opening the doors of the trailer. If the wind were to catch one of those doors there will be nothing you can do to stop it!

Of course I don't have to mention pee-pee in the wind, that's a no brainer!

On a positive note, when its windy like that it makes for a nice good hard nap! Rocks the truck like a babies crib!

I pulled a set of empties over I-70W & I-71S yesterday. It was bad, so I took my time. We had one go over East of Columbus and on the radio I heard two other big trucks went over. I almost shut down but the farther south I went the less wind I encountered. Keep safe out there! And remember, nothing in that box is worh losing your life.

All I do is pull empty and the wind on slick roads will take the super trucker right out of you ! I had on one of them open top garbage wagons with a solid tailgate and the that thing was like pulling a parachute in them 40 mile an hour winds Friday !! I was real happy when I dropped that thing off and bobtailed off to the house for the rest of the year !

I know you are empty but,

A late load is 1000% better than a load spilled into a ditch.

If the conditions are slippery or if there's snow on the road, the wind will blow on yr wind sail aka: your trailer into the ditch. chill for a bit:biggrin_25513:

The driver filming was a nitwit too, using a handheld while driving, no better than the Prime driver.....
