Attending private school that I am paying for myself. Will have CDL-A in three weeks. Questions about applying.
1. Should I start applying now, or wait until I actually have my CDL?
2. For literally the past three years I have ZERO employment history. But I was busy. Very busy. I purchased a property and renovated it and managed it this past 18 months as a short term vacation rental. I also had investments to live off of. I also remodeled and flipped furniture etc. Flipping is of course cash and under the table type stuff....(very lucrative for anyone interested, I averaged $1200 weekly in income)
How the hell do I put this down, or tweak it to put it down on my applications to these companies. What do I put? Literally? I have never been some unemployed bum and sat on my ### doing nothing, it's just the past three years I was not punching someone's time clock and doing my own thing.
Any other advise, or places that can help me with an application format to write up and follow is great. What about using those fake reference places?
I keep finding threads on here with guys with ten years military experience, or past driving experience and perfect records not being called because they had a year gap, or took a year off, etc. Seems totally unfair to me. Then they bring on some felon because they can count for his whereabouts? ooooooo-K. LOL
Workaround for gaps.

Submit applications right now; don't wait until graduation. You'll get job offers contingent on successfully completing cdl school and having any required endorsements.

Just write up what you were doing, be prepared to show some receipts or other proof, maybe provide some references of people that can vouch for your activities.

remodeling and managing a rental property is self-employment; that counts [J J Keller even has a form for describing periods of 'self-employment"

I don't think there is a foolproof way to do this. My best suggestion is to get as much evidence as you can to support your activities as possible. A carrier is going to hire or they will not. The ones that will not are overreacting to the 391.2x series rules. Remember per 391.23 these carriers have to show on a drivers file these attempts to verify history. Then add to this there are a lot of contracted compliance specialists that don't know their butt from a hole in the ground that tell these carriers to NOT hire with gaps. 391.23 is a regulation that is hard to understand and people put things in it that are not true. My best advice is telling these carriers to pound sand and keep looking for a carrier with some good common sense.

I'VE APPLIED THIS AFTERNOON To three carriers, all mid-level companies. In my application it is noted that I am still in CDL school, I have no prior experience, and working through their application process online, I simply listed what I stated in the first post. self employed, managing my rental, etc. All three had recruiters call me within minutes and none stated anything about any gaps. I know recruiters do not actually hire you but they started talking about how I would go through their training etc the second I am out of school. One said I could even be assigned a trainer in the next week if I wanted.

You'll be fine, relax. Good luck in your new career!

People generally did not care for gaps in my situation either. I tell them I spend that time sending in applications and then produce a list of who, when, what, where and how each and every one.
Their eyes glaze over first, then they back away slowly shifting eyes from side to side as if they were trapped. funny how that works sometimes =)
