I'm sure this is a pretty unusual situation but can you work 6 months out the year and then not work the rest maybe take local jobs? You couldn't be a company driver doing that you would have be a independent or a Owner Operator and your truck is paid for

Oh you can find plenty of jobs working 6 months/year and as a company driver. The question is do you qualify? I know a couple guys that do that now, but they each have over 30 years experience and are basically semi-retired. They just can't get the road completely out of their blood.

What do you have to do to qualify.

And lose a lot of money, even if the truck is paid off, you still have insurance and other expenses

Marten Transport has a "flex fleet" that works one week on and one week off but it's only available in certain areas.

you can always let dispatch know you intend to quit for a certain season and quit on good terms so you are eligible for rehire, then apply again when you are ready.

The only problem is you'll have to go through the starting process with any company, get a different truck, etc.

I always wondered about doing this as an owner op, is there not a way to cancel your insurance for a period of time?

    FLYMIKEXL and TBonze Thank this.
