Alright, I've been considering a few way of getting my cdl's I could go to school (pay for it myself) let the company pay for it. Now the other day I was talking to a driver(TMC) and I mentioned earlier in the conversation that my father is a truck driver...Well he said just go and get your permit then go on the road with him and learn how to drive a truck that way. I sounds like a decent deal. So would you do this and has anyone else done this? I would rather learn from my father than to someone I've never meet before. And its a better relaxed environment too.

I would and I did. My family is full of owner ops and small fleet owners, when I turned 18 I borrowed one of dads trucks and went to take the test. No reason to waste the money on a CDL school if you have a willing teacher and a truck available for free.

keep in mind that many of the giant OTR companies wont be interested in hiring you unless you've been to a CDL school... but those aren't places I'd recommend anyway.

I spent the $ since I did not know someone to ride with. To me, he sounds like a great resource. Get the state manual, study it, take the written, have him prepare you for the exam. Find out what the usual exam covers and have your dad teach you how to do all of it. Have him set you up with other drivers he works with to do a sanity check before you take the exam.

    Good luck!

Depends on how dad feels about it, as well, but if you get along well and he is agreeable, you may as well go for it. Good luck to you.

I did this in PA when I was 18. Joined the military and let my CDL lapse. BIG MISTAKE! It is such a pain in the butt to get it now. If you can do it, I say go for it, but you will be lucky to find work without going through a course.

If you go to TMC they are a good company.

But i would recommend you don't have them paying your school note

Shortly after i was terminated i was told by a few friends in the office that it had to do with cost cutting, and that i should wait 30 days and re-apply.

Some other friends of mine were let go as well, the one thing that we all had in common besides the insurance they were paying for was that TMC was still paying for our school loan. Oddly enough before that, a year had gone by with them mysteriously just not paying on it, and it ended up going to a creditor because nobody bothered to contact me about it. So i missed out on like a whole year of payments that i'm now making myself.

They're paying unemployment though, so.. Meh, oh well. >.<

well my pop said he's up for it. But why is it better to go to a schooling to get your cdl's rather than learn on your own and get the test. I figured as soon as I would get my cdl's I would be given the same job opportunity's like a rookie out of school

Not true, unless you go to work for your pop and he pays the extra insurance to cover a rookie. No school means most companes that would hire someone with no experience would require a training program which means you are back in school, you just have a cdl and the others in school with you don't. You will need this training to be covered by the companies insurance. You may be able to get a job driving a straight truck with that CDL, but not OTR.
