"Started with 1 truck 3 years ago and now I have 5"

Started in the boom, over paid for equipment, and blaming the mega for under cutting.

I will admit Texas to Washington and back is not exactly a hot flatbed route

Yep and bought high cost trucks at that.

if you all listen to this guy, he said he bought trucks with a diesel mechanic family background (which is meaningless) but didn’t understand how to adjust brakes on a truck.

then the MT is saying he did everything right, which is wrong.

This is another sob story with a poorly managed owner.

You are correct, if you can't compete you're gone. I've always thought that in the trucking business if you're making money and enjoying what you're doing you'd better get it while you can . Because someone is going to try and take it away if they can.

Again, companies are desperate to keep their trucks moving and survive. It happens every down cycle.

That’s why it pays to always run a lean, tight, and profitable company. In good times and bad times.

Companies are doing this, For 4 years or so now i pulled to Kansas dedicated for $2000/trip,
Sometimes having to DH back, but it paid exclusively because they wanted the truck on their products only.
    560 miles round trip.
Another company with a bunch of trucks cut the rate in half, $1000/trip, put dedicated drivers on it and rented a bunch of trailers.
I get a call every now and then to take up slack, I refuse.
My notice I wasn’t doing the loads anymore was “This is your last load.”
I agree, that was my last one there.
    Move along.

Yes, it happens a lot more than people think, it drives rates across the board down, even contracted rates are effected.

However, the one thing that puzzles me is he had five paid-off trucks and he is closing up shop because ONE customer said 'we've found a cheaper carrier', which begs the question why isn't he actually looking for work to keep those trucks running, it isn't like Texas is empty except for that one customer.

He said we went to spot market and saw it wasn't worth it to keep the business going with how low rates are.

Do you believe he started with 1 truck 3 years ago and now he has 5 trucks paid off?
