If that was the case, he wouldn't go out of business so easily.

Not necessarily, the lower rates go the more tempting it is to park a paid off truck and go do something else if even just a company driver.

Why run your truck into the ground to earn similar money or less than a company driver?

    Coffey and mitmaks Thank this.

I didn't watch the video and I dont know the story but going out of business doesn't mean he's broke. Maybe enough sense to get out before he's broke

That's the message I got from the video. Why spend old profits just to break even. Or he got used to the good money and doesn't want to work for less.

His reaction when asked about safer, he verbally doesn't blame it directly on a driver. But his physical reaction says a lot.
My guess, he is tired of the business end of operating. High safer scores and insurance lower profit. More office work keeping trucks loaded using load boards than direct shippers.

I see his number is inactive on safer. Decision made, time for vacation.

That is not looking for work.

When I was hitting my lows ~10 years ago, I was out there looking for work, actually going to places and asking what they needed. Looking at the spot market isn't close to what he should have done.

There is a lot of freight to be found, how do people think brokers get some of their customers?

My guess is the pay structure he had for his employees was such that he wouldn't be able to keep them if he didn't have freight over $3 a mile.

If his numbers were real and he was paying 20% with no benefits his drivers would be making 70 cpm. If all of a sudden they started making 55 cpm, how long would they stick around?

He lucked onto a golden goose, then when that died he understood that while his trucks are "paid off", they probably aren't "paid for" - ie he has a lot of his own money in them that he wants out before it rots aways to nothing.

Sure there is always freight, when everybody is hauling for $1 a mile all you got to do is come in and say you'll haul the loads for 0.70 cent a mile and that'll surely get you some freight.

The challenge isn't finding loads it's finding loads that pay when everybody and their mama knows there's countless trucks out here hauling for cheap.

Well all that chrome ain't cheap and having a truck that gets 5mpg isn't best business idea. I like how classics look but probably will never own one as I'd rather keep that fuel money I save driving my plastic aerodynamic KW.

We have 5 paid off trucks and run mostly load board freight. Yeah profit isn’t what it used to be but I don’t see how you can fail at it except a bad wreck with a lawsuit.

Truck reliability and how much you pay your drivers is a huge factor also.
