I think the OP just wants to help us drivers get fair pay, like OckMed who keeps calling me trying to help me find good payin loads.

Owner operators don’t care which way a broker calculated miles. I calculate the miles based on the route that I will take and bid accordingly.
HHG miles may help a broker show a higher rate per mile but all said and done it may actually be a lot less depending on the route.
This topic is really just for company drivers. Fact is most of the bigger carriers are using the practical miles method to attract new drivers.tscottme and Trucker61016 Thank this. -
Actually, HHG (before computers mileage programs) was a big book that gave the mileage between major cities. Then you used the mileage scale to the destination.
wis bang, Concorde and Trucker61016 Thank this. -
What did your son agree to when he took the job? I suspect somewhere in the pile of paperwork that he didn’t read it stated pay is based on zip to zip.tscottme, Trucker61016 and Concorde Thank this.

No. I follow my son who drives for Stevens. It seems like they really don't care about their drivers. And most of the people who work behind the scenes apparently don't know what the #### they are doing!!Concorde Thanks this.

It’s whatever your son signed up for. Some companies do pay actual miles. ODFL was one.
D and D Sexton and Freymiller paid HHGM, and I calculated the discrepancy as about 7% to my detriment over a year or two tracking paid/actual.Diesel Dave and Concorde Thank this. -
I don’t think so. He appears to be concerned for his son - and is realizing that this industry/job is full of arrangements that are not to the drivers benefit.hope not dumb twucker, Diesel Dave, Big Road Skateboard and 1 other person Thank this.

Ahh yes, I remember your other thread now about your son and Stevens.
Stevens does pay HHG miles. Unfortunately new drivers looking to get into this profession don’t pay much attention to the different ways of paying mileage. It’s not until they start seeing a discrepancy in miles driven vs pay.
While you both may be down on Stevens right now, just remember he could have done a lot worse.
Stevens is known for good training and they have some really nice clean trucks and trailers. I always recommend them when I get a chance even with my distaste for reefer work.
I would tell him to keep track of practical miles for a month and compare it to his HHG miles paid. Just use google maps for practical miles..input pick and drop locations and choose preferred route. Miles shown will be accurate.
I don’t believe that it’ll be life changing money but would be nice to compare one from another. Maybe be surprised if there really isn’t much difference. -
It doesn't really matter, because being paid by the mile while being regulated by the hour means you're getting screwed regardless of whether you get paid address-to-address or zip code-to-zip code.

NOTHING in the law mentions how truck drivers are to be paid. If a driver and company agree to be pay per sunset, per 100 miles, per hour, per mile, per hub mile, or per bug splat on the windshield they can. MOST of the trucking regulations were made long before WWII. There used to be a big book with city pairs and the mileage between them. You whipper-snappers that didn't meet the world until smartphones and GPS and color TVs think nobody did anything before GPS satellites?
