I own a piano restoration and moving business. Been doing it for 25 years so plenty of experience in moving pianos sometimes asked to move a piece of furniture here and there. Truck sits while doing restorations so it's not really making me any money.
Got to thinking maybe there may be some way of getting some fill-in work for the truck and my two helpers when shop work is being done.
Are there any solutions for this situation? Any brokers that specialize in small box truck type things? I've done searches and found 1 thread with this issue addressed. They mentioned plumbing, electrical, bakeries, landscaping companies may could use my services.
What do the pros here think?

I’d contact a furniture store or a dozen. and ask about doing deliveries for them . See if they need any extra help occasionally.
would also think that lots of places could use a extra hand doing deliveries , but it’s gonna open yourself up for endless liability if and when the customers claim your guys scratched or damaged a delivery.
I have a friend that owns a business that stages empty houses that are for sale .
Hauls in the furniture , makes the place look lived in , and the house will sell for about $15k higher than if it’s empty.
there’s lots of places that need delivery companies to help out when their own drivers and trucks are busy .Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Don’t.
With things like plumbing and clean outs of houses will beat the crap out of the truck.
beside you will have to have liability insurance on the people working for you specific for things like clean outs, just talk to large estate sale companies.
one thing that you could do is contact companies that do airport pickup and deliveries. Sometimes you can get some consistent work from there.Suspect Zero and wis bang Thank this. -
You would need to break the lease, get your own insurance active, move the piano and then reverse it all. Depending on how much you need it your self it could be a PITA even if the carrier and your insurance was agreeable.
They are doing mostly city delivery. Judging by the amount of time they are with us, including the fact that one had his own DOT number but couldn't keep a one truck show busy, they must be doing well even if not working every day.
The insurance and lease complicate things.
One guy, on his day off went out to get an oil change, etc. and on his way back is side-swiped by a Mercedes claiming bodily injury. His Non Trucking coverage booted it saying maintaining his truck benefits the carrier and was our liability. My insurance researched up to a NTL specialist for NJ who agreed that it would be our coverage even though he wasn't under 'dispatch'...case still has not settled but he took good pictures and I think it will be denied; we will see. -
Get rid of the truck. If you’re not using often enough that you’re in here looking for other things to do with it, then it sounds like you’d be better off selling it and simply renting a truck when you do need one for moving a piano.
Rental trucks (Uhaul, Penske, etc...) are cheap compared to owning one time you figure maintenance, fuel, insurance, etc...N00bLaLoosh and wis bang Thank this. -
