Owner operator Frac Sand or flatbed

    Owner operator here, been pulling reefer for last year and a half, looking at either going back to flatbed or pulling sandboxes hauling frac sand. If anyone has any input, I’d appreciate it. I have plenty of flatbed experience, so I know what I’d be getting into there. Was just wondering if the frac sand deal is worth it. Is the money really there like they say?(8-10,000 gross, net 4000ish/week). And also, how bad is it on the truck? I have a pretty nice 2006 W900, don’t want to just trash it, but if the $$ is there, then I could keep it up. Thanks

    Where are you located? Bucket can be seasonal work in the north, or if not, anything that moved in winter (salt) doesn’t pay.

    Personally Id take your time finding a decent used flat bed if for nothing else to sit in the yard until you need it, but I like being able to hop around to where the money is

    Frac sand doesn’t move in a bucket.

    if you want to haul sand I would find work near home.

    Flatbed if you don't want to trash your truck. Not sure where you're located but here in PA those guys literally get pulled up hills by dozers tied off to dozers

    They also drag in all kinds of trucks, not just sand. eastern Ohio and West Virginia are just as bad.

    Some of the steepest terrain I've been on in the oilfield is southeast Ohio. All along Ohio RT 7 and WV rt2 is almost vertical coming up out of the river valley. Had to throw chains a few times in the summer after it rained

    Oilfield work is hard on your truck. All signs on this website point to flatbed being the best paying freight around, so I would say go with flatbed for sure. One member here who switched from flatbed is now back pulling flatbed so it must be way better.

    I started out hauling Frac sand and then got a step deck to haul freight with.Once I saw that the rates aren’t going to go back up anytime soon I switched back to Frac sand.Good money can be made but it is something where you’re going to do best with a company that runs within the 150 air miles and doesn’t require ELD (I follow all DOT regulations).Trashing a truck depends on where you’re planning on running and if you want to wreck the truck to get to the sand plant faster or to the location or if you take your time on the lease roads to make sure that you’re not wrecking your truck.There are different trailers to haul sand besides sand box like hopper bottom which I like and also pneumatic which requires investing in a blower but usually pays more then the others.Definitely money to be made but also you have to do your research because there are a lot of companies out there that don’t use Vaseline. I can recommend one that I know for a fact that pays and they are currently running in New Mexico and sometimes west Texas.
