I want to be an o/o, running under my own authority. So, I'm curious about what happens when I have a load and I have a breakdown? And if you answer about load boards helping in that case, do they all do that and/or what do they do?

    Boondock Thanks this.

No. You got it, it's yours.
If you know someone who can pull it, that's fine. But they won't re-post it for you. Plus, presumably, it's your trailer.

There’s a few ways to get this done. I’m assuming breakdown is longer than a day or two.

    1. Most tow companies will deliver the load for you if it’s relatively close by a couple hundred miles. Won’t be cheap.

    2. Ask a friend with a truck to deliver the load.

    3. Rent a truck. Peterbilt dealer near me makes it fast, under 30 min, and they charge $250/day.

    4. When you notify broker of breakdown, if you ask, they will find another truck to make the delivery. It’s cheaper than option 1.

What happens if it's not my trailer but a leased trailer? And are there penalties I need to pay if a load is late under these conditions?

When you write that a towing company will deliver the trailer, you are talking about when I'm hooked up and going to get repairs, the tow truck will drop the trailer if it's not too far out of the way?

With Landstar - it’s put out on the SOS board. Other BCO’s may come and rescue, deliver and return the trailer.

It’s always a bad situation. Some guys will do you a favor - others will screw you for the entire revenue. LS rarely contributes.

You’re in a bad spot already, towing, repairs. Someone else completing your job, it’s gonna cost.

That’s the ‘leased on to a carrier’ perspective.

The towing company will take your truck wherever you tell them to and a separate truck will take your trailer to the delivery location and bring it back to wherever you ask. Most tow companies have day cabs and will do this for you but again won’t be cheap.

If it’s a breakdown and you notify and work with broker it’s highly unlikely you’ll be charged late fees for delivering. As for lease trailers that all depends on what it says on the lease.

My apologies, guys and gals, but I'm such a newbie that I don't know what a BCO or LS is. Can you please define those? And, I'm in the process of doing a business plan and then applying for a truck loan. So, with that in mind, I'm curious what y'all thoughts and experiences are with an o/o leasing on to a trucking company or getting loads on the spot market. And, is the spot market basically all the loads I try to get from load boards?
