Some of these customers need to learn how to plow their yard, put salt down or something. Here at Coca-Cola Grand Forks and got stuck in the middle of their yard due to snow and ice. Thankfully i was able to get unstuck by myself with not too many issues. Reminds me of the time i almost got stuck bobtail in front of the tractor shop in Fargo last winter because they didn't plow the yard.

 

@Zangief how did orientation go? Are you with a trainer?

 

Hi @cdavis188 . I got through orientation, and then went out with the trainer. Everything seemed to be going pretty well as far as I could tell, but a couple of days ago, we stopped at the Coon Rapids terminal and I received a call from Aron telling me that my trainer had made the decision that he didn't think he would be able to continue training me.

I was absolutely stunned, because I had no indication that there was any real problem between us personally. I confronted him about this and he said two different times that it is nothing personal. All I was told was that he had a problem with my speed entering cloverleafs on a couple of occasions and that he felt that I followed the vehicle in front of us too closely. Both of these issues seem to me to be very easy to correct, so I really have no clue what his real issue was.

I am only the second person he has attempted to train. The first one promptly quit when he (the trainer) used a 5-gallon pail on the truck to take a dump while the trainee was on the truck. He did this on two occasions while I was on the truck too. I had Covid about 6 months ago, so fortunately my sense of smell still hasn't come back yet. LOL. I tried not to make an issue of it the first time, but have to admit that I was a little annoyed when he did it the second time a few days ago. I was up in the top bunk when we were parked at a shipper when he decided that he just had to go right now. What annoyed me was the fact that there were two Porta-Potti's sitting within 50 feet of the truck that he could have very easily used. I'm assuming he just didn't want to go out in the cold and sit on a cold toilet seat.

In any case, I didn't make a big issue of it. In fairness, I should say that the trainer was actually a decent guy for the most part, and all along, I felt that we actually had a decent rapport, and that everything was going very well.

One thing to keep in mind is that I am not a new driver who doesn't have a clue how to drive. I have three and a half years of experience driving OTR with Roehl Transport. I had to go through the 4 weeks of training with Magnum because it has been about 8 years since I last drove a semi. I know how to drive a truck. I just had to shake off a little rust from the time away and become accustomed to driving an automatic transmission.

When I received the news that the trainer wanted to call it quits, I was totally shocked because I never saw it coming. No big deal though. Aron suggested that they could set me up with an LTL driver to finish my training locally. I'm going to do that, but I did ask them if I could take a little time off before doing that because I need to help my sister get my dad transitioned from living in his house to an assisted living facility. He's 92 and he lost his wife earlier this year, so he has been slipping a lot since then.

Once I get Dad set up in a good place, I'll finish up the training and Aron said they will get me in my own truck and out on the road. I'm really looking forward to getting back out there!

Sorry for the lengthy reply, but it was kind of a strange situation and I wanted to explain everything as fully as possible. Thanks again to you and everybody on this board for the great information that got me hooked up with Magnum. They seem to be a very good company. I look forward to seeing you around when I get out there!

Yeah, it's not something I'd ever do to someone if I were a trainer. I just figured I'd try to take the bad with the good, put in my time as a trainee, and then I'd be on my own. He's actually not a bad guy otherwise. I guess I just have another "war story" to tell in my old age now. LOL.

 

I won't take a dump in my truck...and I am a solo driver. That whole ''skunk doesn't smell his own scent" saying is b.s.

 

It's not a good thing to do, for sure. At the same time, I don't want to use this space to drag my trainer's reputation through the mud. He was a personable guy, and was also very generous. The first night I spent in the top bunk was probably the worst night of sleep I've ever had, because it was so uncomfortable. My trainer was nice enough to use his own money to buy a mattress topper for me to use and it made a big difference. He also bought me a hat and a tool for cutting cable seals on the trailer. That was very nice of him. I told him that I intended to give him some money for that mattress topper, but as it turned out, I never got the chance.

Overall, the time spent in his truck wasn't bad, and I don't have a bad opinion of him. I just wish he would have been willing to tell me what his real reason was for wanting to quit being my trainer. It would have been nice to just finish up the last couple of weeks and move on, but I'm looking it as maybe it was God's way of directing me back home for a short time to help my sister out with my dad's situation. Before long, I'll knock out the last couple of weeks and be back out there on my own putting in some miles!

 

You sir are too kind. If my trainer took a crap with me in the truck I would have kicked the bucket over and called the company to send an Uber ASAP.
