As much as I like to help out and be a team player, that desperately needed empty would've sat where I park my truck until I came off of hometime or another driver came to pick it up. My hometime is my hometime. I detach myself from work at that point. I collect my things, make sure the ELD is good and truck secured, then I don't show my face around there for the next several days (I park my truck at another company's yard where I live).

I know some people have different opinions, but when it comes to my time at home, you better make any requests before I go off duty. Otherwise, tough luck. It's the one and only thing I'm very picky and stubborn about. Won't get into the details of why that is *cough cough- Schneider*.

Team player? Doing my job safely the last 10 years here should qualify as a team player. Perfect way to operate on hometime. I park my truck and trailer at a secure lot that’s 1.5 miles from my house. I park it, clean it out, do my QC, shut the batteries off and walk away. I don’t check on it, look at it or even acknowledge the fact it exists until the night before I have to leave. The only saving grace is all my wife’s shopping is right around the truck, she’ll let me know in her travels if it’s still there. Plus my go to Dunkin’ Donuts is 500 yards from the truck so I will see that it’s still parked where I left it. I’ve been home for a month, on vacation overseas for weeks and never once go look at it. If the company calls me with one of their typical fires to put out, my standard reply is, “sorry, I’d like to help yet another screw up on your part, but my wife and I are down in the Keys for the next few days” I’ve used that SOP multiple times over the last 10 years. Works every time.

I use to use the "I'd be happy to, how long does it take for a 12 pack of Miller Light to clear your system?" (We use to haul Miller out of Albany, GA)...that worked until the boss found out I don't drink.
