Some drivers are their own worst enemy. Got to witness a JB Hunt container hauler fly off the handle at Crete because, according to him, he was 40 pounds over on his steer axle. The guy in the office was trying to tell him he would burn fuel off and he wasn’t having it. I asked to see his ticket and he was 12040 on his steer, a little over 79k gross. I offered that even with G rated steers he’d be legal at that weight and being under 80k the scales wouldn’t bat an eye anyway. I got told if they want to overload him like that they can rework the load.

When I left he was sitting in his truck, wasting time waiting for an open dock, all for a non-issue.

Hell, with the variance in how a scale calculates your weight, I have seen more of a shift than that much just doing a reweigh. He better hope that they don't ever put him in a Volvo. The Genie load I pulled out of the PNW I was 13020, 25,520 and 33600 with my 5th wheel all the back and my rear tandems 1 pin forward of 41'.

I assume he was already having a bad day and this caused him to firmly dig his heels in to make some sort of point.

I don't know what causes people to self destruct like that including me.

I would like to know what his front axle weight rating was. Mine is 13,300 lb and we run H rated tires.

also, the scale at Crete isn’t too accurate on the best of days. What that scale reports and what the CAT scale reports are two different things, usually by a couple thousand pounds

Volvos are kind of like Western Stars used to be...NOSE heavy. The 389 I was driving in Alaska was a bit over 30K bobtailing, with real close to 13,000 on the steers. It would usually run about 12,500 on the steers, when loaded, until my gross was over 100k, then it would get heavier. I could run 20k on the steers on that truck with the tires on it and in AK, you can do 38K on tandems. (25k on steers and tandems up to 47,500 with a permit, provided the tires aren't overloaded. Didn't have to worry too much about heat buildup with an average speed of 35-40mph.

Or he’s just an idiot and afraid of the law. I mean honestly. How many people have come on here asking if the should run something or rework it because they are 700 pounds over on a set of drives?

When i was at Magnum, i picked up a trailer that was 34700 on the drives even with the tandems all the way forward. I ran it because i knew that by the time i crossed the first open scale on my route, i would’ve burned off enough fuel. There’s also this thing called an APU exemption that helped my situation

Plan ahead though. Not all states honor the exemption.
