Was taught to float never knew any different . Was a production manager at a furniture factory , owner leased trks from ryder at the time . He decided to buy a couple of used astro gmc cab overs , single axle beasts . No a/c , freakin am radio , coffins had bigger space than the sleepers lol . You would have to dang near stand on the clutch .
He hired students fresh out of schools at the time and would have me ride with them thru the city to see if they could handle the set up . After about the 5th time I was done with that #### . They was not use to ragged ##### eguipment like that , d/c was killing them in the beast . Not to mention my nerves . My hat is of to any and all trainers lol.
TBH it would take some gettig use to for me to dc . My family taught me to float more by hearing than rpms . I will get back into the industry prolly at the end of this yr or first of next yr. Are most of the schools and companies training to dc ?

What's this clutch you keep talking about.
I've always floated, even in cars with syncros. -
When I really need to get into a gear I'll dc. Usually lower gear downshift dc so it can be smooth. The rest float. Got a brand new truck with an automatic, meh miss shifting
-
I learned to dc in school. I've taught myself to float going up. But I have a hell of a time downshifting by floating. So I just double clutch going down....
-
Floating is the way to go. Allows for faster shifting, less fatigue caused by constantly pumping the clutch, and saves some wear and tear on the clutch. Some models vary. I drive a Eaton 10-speed. 1,700 RPM for upshift, then I downshift as soon as the needle hits 1400 RPM. If your RPM drops too low during your downshift, you may not be able to float it out of gear into neutral. Best quick fix is to tap the accelerator real fast and then pop it out of gear, then another quick tap to get the RPMs to match your ground speed to get it into the next lowest gear.
ncmickey Thanks this. -

Sounds about right. I know I discovered in school that I can double clutch faster than even my instructor could float, when speed through the gears was necessary, but of course the floating seems to be nice when you're just cruising.
He said that when he hired on with Crete he DC'd through the gears for the guy once and he said was that good enough, and the guy said "We don't DC here" and he was like GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME! haha -
Floating works on the pavement. Not so much off road. It's good to be proficient at both methods.
'olhand and Tonythetruckerdude Thank this. -
