If the report had mentioned that this particular Swift truck had malfunctioning Elogs and had been using paper for a week everyone on this site would immediately call into question the media bias and declare it all lies.
Perhaps the numbers are real but then again perhaps it's spin or complete lies.

With that out of the way, far too many starter carriers are developing an over reliance on videos and training simulators over real world, hands on experience. As an example: when I started with Transport America, they had a simulator. It was a glorified bloody video game! A seven year old could beat the blasted thing! Heck, the only challenge to it was not hitting Bambi when he trotted out in front of a 4 wheeler in the left break down lane! Any gamer would have seen it coming!
Those simulators are easier than any first level or training level racing simulator game on the market today. They DO NOT do a darned thing to prepare rookie drivers for the reality of the real road and real stupidity. Only real world experience does that. And the backing training is just about useless, as well. Anybody can learn basic backing maneuvers in a controlled setting set to perfect conditions. How about setting up backing courses that actually simulate some of the crap we see out here on a regular basis (in fairness, Stevens Transport in Dallas did this when I went through them a few years ago)?
Carriers need to take training far, far more seriously than they currently do. They need to stop viewing trainer trucks as cheap teams, and actually allow trainers the time and resources to TRAIN these newer drivers on how to operate these trucks safely. And if you new drivers don't have the patience to undergo a thorough training period before being cut loose on your own, please find something else to do. -
We had simulators when I was with Schneider, I agree they are all but useless. Fun, but useless.
