You'll learn that these situations are caused by loss of traction to either the drives or trailer tandems (i.e. skidding). Rule of thumb is take it slow (or shutdown) in inclement weather (rain, snow, ice, etc.). If you lock your brakes, you may set yourself up for this very thing. 1) Bad stuff happens when you panic. If you find yourself in a parking lot and you think you're stuck, don't panic. Get out. Walk the lot and think of how you can back out. If you got in, you can get out as long as you're not all twisted up like a pretzel from panic.

2) Really bad stuff happens when you follow too closely, speed in confined spaces, or speed in bad weather. So, Don't.

 

Best is never to get into one.

Ive had a few but always got it back before it folded. Violent and fast work on the wheel.

Wreckers come get you for a bunch of money to pull you straight.

 

The answer to this question largely depends upon the severity of the Jack knife situation. If it is minor and you have traction, you can cut the wheel and straighten out. Most jack knife accidents put the truck off the road in bad road conditions and a wrecker will be necessary as will a trip to the repair shop. In severe cases where the trailer has entered the cab area, the driver may be missing body parts and require immediate assistance to prevent death. sometimes the driver is completely crushed and only requires notification of the next of kin.
Your best option is to not let it happen in the first place.

(not that I drink the horse whiz, just know a lot of my neighbors that do)
