I'm exactly opposite. Buy newer with warranty. You're going to pay through the nose either way.

That's why you see larger companies using newer trucks. Payments are cheaper in the long run due to breakdowns and lost loads.

    Reliability is more efficient.

The majority of threads you read on here, people buy cheap, but end up purchasing up because the breakdowns kill them on their bottom line.

    Lowlite Thanks this.

Also don't have a large enough savings and that older truck will put you out of business quickly.

A newer truck with warranty takes care of the costs. You just have to absorb the lack of money coming in due to downtime.

Old trucks need repairs. New trucks need payments. Pick your poison.

But also realize as a individual when it comes to get warranty work your at the bottom of the totem pole on getting work completed.
They will take care of larger fleets first on warranty work then paying customers then you.

Be paitient, save money and determine what type of trucking you want to do. Plenty of older trucks that are well cared for out there making money, shop for a mechanic while you’re shopping for a ride.

Also be realistic about what the first few years will be like, one of the things holding me back is the time it takes to build trusted relationships with customers and brokers, you’ll be starting at the bottom again and working your way up...plenty of high paying company driving jobs, but they don’t come with the freedom of calling your own shots.

Yeah, I’m not a big fan of being forced to work to make a payment.

We've had several O/O's sell their paid off trucks and become company drivers over here. Said it was comforting to know that if the company truck broke down they a)get paid breakdown pay while it's down and/or b)had the option of using a spare truck while their assigned unit was in the shop. Plus, health insurance was waaaaay cheaper as a company driver. Since they had many years service with the company, they knew the people in the office, and were still treated like O/O's when loads were planned.

Read the disaster stories of "not having a payment."

Newer truck payments are less expensive than repairs.

It’s about risk, if you are open to it then get an older truck that’s in good working order, so many miss the step of making sure the truck is mechanically sound, anyway a new truck eliminates some risk.

The safer route is to work for a good company as a company driver...pick your path be smart and try to enjoy what you do, then it’s not so much like work.
