Repetition, repetition, and repetition. Make it so its muscle memory. Thats how I learned. Rather then sit in front of the book and try to memorize, I practiced my pre-trip, in cab, and air brake test with the truck as much as I could so I could recite it without having to even think.

Great site. It helped me pass my pre trip. I wish I would have found it sooner.
Good luck!BIGLEFTYINTX Thanks this. -

Driving a truck is a big responsibility. Get a copy of your cdl book at local dmv and study it and pretrip. Everything in it is fair game. Doesn’t matter what school you attend. If you can’t absorb the material in your mind, then that means that trucking is not in your mindset and is boring to you. It’s bettwr to find something that peaks your interest. Same goes for college students earning a degree that someone told them that would net them the most money. Find something your heart desires. If trucking is something you really want to do, you will find the reading interesting and will take the time to absorb the material. Years ago while reading the cdl handbook, I found the material interesting and easily past the test

Charlie Daniels Band. - CDB - Cracked Damaged Broken (or Leaking when applicable.)
Repetition, no getting around it. Type out a script and double check your list of checks.
Do it in the same order every time.
Practice on your POV.
Good luck!

If I need to memorize something (or a long list of somethings) the only way I can do it is to write everything down, in my own unique method.
I do this for directions, and anything important I need to remember - did it myself with the entire pre-trip when prepping for my cdl test.
(forget about someone else writing directions, doesn’t work for me. I have to copy them over anyway.) -
Regarding the entire vehicle... I don't suggest any of you do what I do.
A thought: "Everything attached to a Semi Truck is there for a specific reason. Nothing is extraneous." with that in mind I'll start at the top of the engine bay and work down on the left front. Point point point point telling tester to the 9th degree even down to the spring hangers. (That is when they usually abort the test and move on to something else)Dan.S Thanks this. -
Failing it the first time around was a great study aid for me.

Write it down how you would say it yourself. I actually rewrote most of my study guide from my school, helped me remember & understand everything better. While @ school 2 or 3 of us would get in the cab & do the Air Brake & In Cab over & over.
I would also do the Air Brake inspection before I would drive my vehicles. If I was stuck in traffic by a big rig, I would do a pre trip for the 5th wheel, trailer, etc.
