I've spent months looking through the wisdom and harsh advice of most of the people in the wonderful forum an ultimately have decided to look for a company sponsored CDL certification program that I can earn a check (albeit small) during the certification process and a decent rookie wage afterwards. I live in Jacksonville, FL and I can attend training anywhere in the country. Okay here is where I get picky: my beautiful 65lb dog has to come with me ( when I am on my own of course). Having a company with a terminal near me (1hr +/-) would be great AND I have gotten my doubles/triples and tanker endorsements and I am currently studying for my HAZMAT. I would also love for the same company to train me in these areas.

Home time is not too much of an issue since my husband and I have spoken at great length about it and he is very supportive - hence why my dog is not a compromise while I'm on the road.

Yes, the butterflies and fairies fly all around me when I think of the perfect company...and then I come here to cross reference it to the carrier's website. All of a sudden those fairies turn into demons with pitchforks and the butterflies turn into hornets. Lol.

So can someone help me? I have (tentatively) thought of FFE and YRC so far. Any other suggestions. Everyone's comments are always appreciative.

80% of this industry is what you make of it. Two employees at the smae company will have both very similar experiences and very different experiences.
Most company's offer animal passenger policy at a small cost. Your first 15 months most likely will have you doubting of this is really for you. Come month 16. You'll either have learned to just let it pass and keep driving. Or hold a grudge and become grouchy. As far as them two companies you've mentioned I have no experiance with them.

Thank you so much! I will take your advice. I don't know where I would be without YouTube.

So you're looking for company sponsored training and a job that will let you bring your dog? Unfortunately, your dog is over the weight limit for most company pet programs. The other limiting factor is breed. Most company pet programs state, "no aggressive breeds".

Wil-Trans trains drivers and has a very liberal pet policy.

Florida is famous for not having any outbound freight. You're not going find many OTR terminals in or near Jacksonville. Most companies will just let you take the truck home and park it there or at a nearby truckstop.

I would seriously consider YRC before going OTR though. YRC's program has no contract or obligation. You work the dock for a month or so and they train you, pay you while they're training you and then start you out on Teamster scale with full union benefits. Home every day with weekends off is a much better pet program than you'll get going OTR.

Check with LTLs in your area. YRC, Odfl, fedex. Most offer paid training, bennies and home daily on top of a very good wage.

You can go to school in Tampa and then take a job with Total in Mississippi. They train you well and treat you great.
